I have absolutely no idea why Lexmark printers get such harsh criticism (OP)
. I have a Lexmark E120N b/w laser printer and the build and print quality is exceptional. Anyhow, there are some decent reviews here, including a Lexmark

I have the Epson Stylus Photo RX520 and it lasted 5 months but that was the scanner part but i got a replacement and the compatible cartridges only cost £5 a set.
This is the risk you take buying a PSC but i love them.0 -
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dells. They sell good peripherals (I'm using a 10-year old Dell keyboard, monitor, and mouse to write this!)
I recently bought a Dell Photo 928 All-in-one for about £75. The printer is fine, but the ink is too expensive; the scanner is not good quality and the driver is really lousy, in my opinion. When printing at the draft/fast setting it rattles about and is noisy.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy one, just that it has these problems.0 -
I should really add that as i'll be doing a lot of low grade black + white printing. The ink life (and price of) is probably the biggest concern at the moment.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0

How about the Canon MP210 at Amazon?
£41 delivered, then you get £20 cashback - there can't be much cheaper than that!
Looks a great buy but will it be another throw away deal? I can't see any cheap replacement inks around so the Canon one's will cost more than the price of the printer, about £27 for the 2 at the moment.0 -

Yeah, that's the kind of point i was making.
As i will be doing lots of printing, it's not really worth buying a good printer at a good price if the ink is really expensive.
That's why i thought epson might be best, but then again i don't want to fall for the 'cheap ink con' in another way, by getting a printer that locks up even when the inks aren't totally out.
Worse still, one that renders the scanner useless just because one of the inks is low.
