Silly farmers asking for more handouts.
Why don't they just pay people properly?
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

I've never seen an advert for harvest labour in the UK.

    YOu've not looked;
Several positions are available for farm work over the summer, on a busy farm near, Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Duties will include many aspects of outdoor manual farm work, including the planting of vegetables, weeding vegetables, harvesting vegetables and many other outdoor jobs on a busy farm. Vegetables such as Broccoli, Cauliflowers, Cabbages, Leeks etc.

Workers must be psychically fit and prepared to work outdoors in most weather conditions. You must also be able to work as part of a small team.

Your own transport is essential. Teams of workers sharing a vehicle is also good.

Previous farm experience is also an advantage but full training will be given.

Rates of pay start at £7.83 p/h, with £9.79 p/h overtime.

Hours are a basic 39 hour week, although workers are expected to be flexible with extra hours when we are in peak summer and have a harvest to bring in.

    Job includes standard holiday pay.

    Over 18's only.

CONTACT – Send EMAIL APPLICATIONS/CV’s. We will contact you.

    Job Type: Temporary

    Licence:

    Driving License (Required)
Join a team of seasonal workers travelling around East Anglia working on farms.

No experience necesary but must be prepared for manual work.

    Transport provided.

Accommodation is generally camping as you move around.

Lots of hours, good company, save cash!

    Job Type: Temporary

    Salary: £8.14 /hour

There's loads more adverts out there.

Basic food is actually very cheap.

It's cleaned/processed food which pushes up the shopping bill.

Despite this, we in the UK spend vast amounts on ready meals and pre-prepared food.

Not really, even if he did get in I would not expect him to keep a single one of his promises, he can't even admit to laying a wreath. He darent admit to his true beliefs.

Oh, and he was on TV actually saying that he would give £10 minimum wage to under 18s in the run up to the last election.

Funny, all this talk about fruit and vegetable pickers makes me think about how British families used to travel from cities to the farms each year to pick vegetables and fruits, treated it as a holiday and had a lot of good times doing it.

That was quite a few decades ago. However, I do remember when students happily did a similar thing until quite recently, treating the whole experience as a holiday, which they also really enjoyed. Now many poor, impoverished students don't have the time, presumably, since they are too busy going off on their 'ME' gap-year holidays, which must inevitably be to 'exotic' locations.

Both cases could easily be a breach of national minimum wage regulations. Another advantage of hiring foreign staff is that they're less likely to complain about things like that!
