Private registration plate

Can you please help?

I am looking at buying my son a private number plate for his birthday, when I look at the reg number on the DVLA site its £250 but only £164 on another website. Whats the difference?

Also, as yet he doesnt have his own car, does the number expire if its not in use, or will it always be his.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Thanks so much

Cant advise on the different sites, perhaps if you provide the link to the other site

As for the plates, you'll get a certificate of entitlement. He'll need to retain that for when he does want to put it onto a vehicle, he can get the plates made up with the cert (to prove he's entitled to have that plate) and then apply online via .gov.uk site to put it on a vehicle.

If I remember right, if its not on a vehicle then you need to renew it every 10 years or you will lose it.

Edit: something to also be aware of in future is that if he sells a car and wants to retain the plate, take the plate off first - any time you transfer ownership of the vehicle or add/remove a private plate using their online service, it immediately creates a new v5 reference and the old one becomes invalid/unusable. It can take a few weeks for the new v5 to arrive (sometimes just a few days though).

You cannot put a newer plate on the car.

Non DVLA websites often don't include the £80 DVLA assignment charge which is needed to put a plate on a vehicle, so the cost may actually be £164 to the other company + £80 to the DVLA when you want to put it on a car, the DVLA includes that charge in the £250.
    It is worth checking.

To be precise - you cannot transfer a plate that would make the vehicle appear newer than it is. So you could in theory get a pre-63 plate with no year identifier and put it on anything. But you probably won't get one of those for £250.
I need to think of something new here...

Good point. And also, if you buy him a reg plate from (say) 2001, he will not be able to put it on a car older than that. You would be restricting his choice of vehicles to newer than the plate itself, which might be a financial problem for him. Just a thought.

All my cars have had private plates with my name. It's a bit of a bind changing your name by deed poll each time you change your car though
  • I bought my plate not so long ago from a company called Absolute Reg ? Have you taken a look on their, was the cheapest I could find available with everything included.

I have a private plate of three letters followed by four numbers which cost £180 (+DVLA charges).
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
