Student co-renter rips off the house

Legally you’re incorrect; they paid a group deposit and they pay a group rent.
Like I said all this was a choice, people survive living with a couple of friends instead of 10.
She didn’t have any friends. She didn’t know anyone and was going to University in a city where there were very few student houses available. And it had to be a student house as the rents in that city are astronomical, so renting privately with, say 4 of the strangers she found wouldn’t have been financially viable.0 -

Most places you can rent a room for £600; but in any case it’s irrelevent.
It’s still a choice; and in this case a silly one.0 -

Yes, I’m sure there were lots of rooms with young professionals around. Though what 18 year old student would want to live with anyone other than other students when they are going to Uni?
Yes, with the benefit of hindsight it was a silly mistake, but to suggest she was flush with many better protected options just isn’t true.0 -

And I never suggested that; just saying it’s all a choice and hopefully a learning point.
Now you’ve found this person, can you get an address?0 -

I’ve found her on Instagram so could contact her on there, but no address as yet. I’ve asked my daughter to get a copy of the original contract as it’s got to be on there.
As with the majority of teenagers; she’s been absolutely useless.0 -

If you've not signed and therefore can't be held liable (is that right?) then why not leave her to sort the mess out on her own? It's seems she has little incentive to stop being 'useless' if you're doing everything for her.0 -

If your daughter and the other tenants aren't interested in doing anything about this then the whole discussion seems rather academic.I've asked my daughter to get a copy of the original contract as it's got to be on there.

If they do want to do something then tracing agents can be a relatively cheap way of finding out someone's current address. But unless the debtor has the money, you're more likely to be throwing good money after bad.0 -

I wouldn't contact her on Instagram. 1) I wouldn't want her to know I had found her before all the ducks are in a row. 2) Not your circus, not your monkeys. It's for your daughter and the other tenants to sort out since your guarantee appears to be as much use as a chocolate teapot....silly agent.
Your daughter and the other tenants need to decide what they want to do. Do they want to chase Mandy down for the money owed? Do they want to find a new tenant and have the tenancy assigned? Do they want to find a new person who will become a lodger of other tenants?
Whose name is the deposit registered under? Usually with joint tenancies the deposit is registered under the lead tenant's name. Hopefully the lead tenant is not Mandy so when the tenancy ends the lead tenant could recoup Mandy's unpaid rent from her share of the deposit.
As for going to the police I find it worrying that a solicitor advised you to waste your time trying to involve the police in a civil matter and uttered the word "fraud."0 -

Don't contact her on instagram, she will block you and you will be no further forward other than to warn her you are searching for her.
If she is studying law, I would be inclined to right to her parents. If they are disinterested they will bin the letter or pass it to her. If they are interested parents they will not want their daughters law degree wasted if she can't get articles because she has a CCJ or at risk of being taken to court!
In the same way that you are looking out for your offspring, Mandy's parents could well be looking out for her.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
