no it's not a sticking point. Your chargeback situation remains the same, in or out of ebay. The post above this EDIT to add by that I mean the post by GabbaGabbaHey - is not talking about chargeback but s75 - neither are usually hand-in-hand with PayPal so for you there is little difference. If you don't have a credit card then S75 is not relevant so I am not sure why the poster is muddying the waters.

If you have the option of buying on ebay you have more protection should things go wrong, if you pay by PayPal via ebay then you are better protected (regardless of how that was funded).

It's just a case of whether I do that, or go through ebay where I have the extra protection of PayPal and the ebay money back guarantee?

If you pay using a debit/credit card through Paypal you have the same protection regardless of where you purchase.

If you purchase on Ebay you have the added protection of Ebay Money Back Guarantee. This crucially gives you the right to a SNAD return free of charge (the seller has to pay the returns postage) if the item turns out to be not as described/faulty.

In your scenario - you pay with Paypal and the item arrives broken. You have to use Paypal's buyer protection to win a case and send it back. The return is at your cost and it must show online tracking. If you buy the same item through eBay and the item is broken on delivery, you will get the returns postage paid for by the seller or eBay.

The only real difference here is that if we do it through ebay over Gumtree and the goods arrive damaged/not as described, I don't have to pay for return postage, but am still covered as I would be otherwise doing the sale through ebay.

The seller on the other hand has to worry about competitors setting him up and then reporting him to eBay, and if you want to get into business, believe me, it all goes on. eBay has created a fertile platform for that kind of underhanded tactics. The benefit to the competitor is they can spend all day reporting listing one by one or just get the whole account shut down without warning through this method.

I'm going to do it through ebay I've decided. For the sake of £25, the fact I know what I'm doing with ebay and have their protection should anything go wrong, over the fact I have never bought anything through Gumtree before or made a purchase this way has swung it for me.


I'd rather pay the extra £25 and know I'm sorted, and have less hassle should anything go wrong.
