perhaps i'm wrong but i always thought a hd picture required a hd connection which is via a hdmi cable only isnt it? if you didnt need a hdmi cable to get hd picture then no-one would bother buying the hdmi cables.0

donnajunkie, you can get a HD connection via VGA and component too. VGA would be rather useless if we were limited to a resolution of 640*480!
Generally speaking:
RGB, Composite, RF, S-Video can't do HD.
Component, DVI, HDMI and VGA are capable of doing HD.
HDMI has the advantage of being a digital signal (unlike component and VGA). DVI is similar to HDMI but only carries a visual source and doesn't have copy protection.
All Xbox 360s are functionally the same, barring HDMI port, you can upgrade a Core/Arcade to an Elite if you so wish. Its just the option of the Hard Drive and amount of peripherals bundled that changes in each pack.
Take a look here for more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360#Comparison_of_features
(ignore the software bundles they're North America only)
Xbox 360s with HDMI are important because they will have a second heatsink on the graphic chip. This has stopped a good proportion of the "Red Rings of Death". The vast majority of machines with HDMI (the earliest Elites being the only exception) also have a more power efficient and cooler CPU which also helps with the machines reliability.
So, if you're buying:
"Pro/Premium": If the machine has HDMI it will be more reliable. If it doesn't have HDMI then it is the original design and prone to the usual problems.
"Arcade" : All machines will be the latest spec and more reliable.
"Core": Likely to be old design, if the machine doesn't have HDMI then it is prone to failure. If it has HDMI then it will be the new design and more reliable.
"Elite": Will have the second heatsink therefore it is more reliable than older machines. Launch Elites did not have the more efficient CPU so may be more prone to failure than newer Elites of Core/Arcade/Pro with HDMI."The state is the great fiction by which everybody seeks to live at the expense of everybody else." -- Frederic Bastiat, 1848.0 -
OP
why did you not contact the company who sold you the console as you would of had it replaced straight away if you bought it from a shop but im not sure how the internet retailers work,No Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -

apparently the premium console does now come with a HDMI port but it depends if the shops have them in stock as theyve been told to sell the older style premium console eg the ones without the HDMI portNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
newer 360s are quieter.my elite(i have an older pro too) is a good bit quiter
HDMI will be on all 360's soon once stock is used up.
any HDMI equipped 360 will have the HDMI logo on the box0 -

i noticed in game today that the old premium versions are at really good prices. i guess they really want rid. they were only £250 and included a couple of games in that price. so if you dont mind gambling with the older premium model then get yourself down there.0

i think most shops have a strict policy with pc games. i think it is because you could take it home copy it and then take it back and get your money back. which means you would have a free game.0

Also some games require registration to work and once registered won't work for anyone else. In Corretto's case there isn't a consumer rights issue because there wasn't anything faulty with the game, it wasn't missold and it wasn't sold long distance so the shop had every right to impose its own policies on refund/replacement. I mean why open it if you're not even sure of the right format, you can see from the case which format it is if a different one is wanted."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
