    It varies, but usually in order to stop people returning alternative handsets. I wonder if Tesco could have screwed up with IMEI numbers?
  • It was sold to me as a 'pay-as-u-go' phone so who would have applied the IMEI code Tesco, Vodafone or htc? If there are two codes in contention who applied the one which shows up when I dial *#06#?

    The network servers log the IMEI every time the phone connects to it. The IMEI that Vodafone are talking about is the one that their server logs show connected with your sim card.
