  • I find a Friday night treat helps...............if you can abstain all week and reward yourself on a friday because by then you do deserve it
  • Good idea, as ever, efes.

I spent money today! Was a weird feeling, ha!
I got a PPI payout this week, & for a start let me brag that I didn't immediately spend it all or treat myself. Me 4 months ago would 200% have waxed it on something indulgent. Instead I added it to YNAB & allocated it to my hopeful-house move. <polishes halo>
This means I have money for all the known house-buying fees now, hurrah! Will still be costs to redecorate (if we even get a mortgage), but that can wait.

Once I realised I hadn't treated myself, tho, I couldn't help addressing that. Bought a necklace for my birthday later this year - then remembered I'd already budgeted for a gift for myself, ha! So it wasn't a cheat at all!
Managed to spend some of it on 2 half price books (£12 total) for mum's xmas present & £35 to replace my waterproof winter shoes. Not v glamorous, but nor are wet feet.

Mortgage valuation was today, should hear more next week & hopefully the underwriting will start.

  • The PPI must have been a lovely extra to receive

Fingers crossed for a trouble free valuation - it must be so exciting
  • Not sure my colleagues will appreciate the leftovers-lunch I’m bringing today, pasta with pesto (inc raw garlic), broccoli, cabbage & parmesan, but my budget will! Maybe i’ll eat it outside (in the rain).
Lots of money schemes & budget planning happening but not much time to post. No mortgage news. Happy new week, all. X

  • Valuation survey not perfect, hmmmmm this might not happen, Or, it might. Waiting to hear how the valuation affects the mortgage offer. Dammit, if this fails because of the property not me, I'll still not know if I can get a mortgage or not! <laughs darkly, verging on hysteria>
Nothing to do about it today. Except eat a lot of cheese & find out if that makes me a more patient person.

This house-buying route is taking me away from the money-certainty thing I want. I know it's a short-term thing to want, but at least scrimping to pay off my debts was more tangible, had more of an obvious effect. All I'm doing now is saving to pay people to do vague expensive things, & watching youtube videos about decorating when there are perfectly good episodes of Orange Is The New Black to watch.
In the longterm, this property malarkey hopefully makes sense & isn't just adding 150k to my debt. In the short term, it feels like the opposite.

Was there much difference in the house value and your offer? Fingers crossed all is ok.

It's an expensive time, but things will settle down once you are in your own home and you can tackle the debt again then.

Unless there's anything urgent to be done, why not leave decorating for a bit. You know better what you want once you've lived there for a while, then you can get back to debtbusting for a bit, feel like you are making progress again.

  • Thanks guys.
Still waiting to hear re final mortgage offer (if indeed we're succesful). Some signs that they might not lend us the full amount we need, following the valuation-survey, but that's me being pessimisitc as I've only seen the valuation, not a response from them to it.
I don't think we'll get final news until next week tbh. Mortgage adviser says this Friday, but the forums suggest this lender is slooooowwww and picky.

Positive thing is, now I'm a budgeting ninja (ahem), I can forecast pretty accurately how much I could scrape together each month if we were really pushed to cover extra surveys or building work. And I think we could just about manage it, if we chose to take that on.

If we get it, I'd like to wait before decorating, & save the money first, but OH is keen to do as much as poss before we move in. We'll see...
