Smart meter installation by EDF I don't want it

Options

Howdy !

I've just received a phone call from EDF telling me that they are going to install a new gas and electricity meter in my property.
However , I was taken aback and I asked them if it was going to be smart metres installed . "Yes " ,I was told . I immediately saw red and told them I don't want them and that I've heard too many bad things about them . The woman was taken aback to say the least .

I asked why they just phoned me out of the blue? If I was a pensioner , I could be vulnerable . I told them I felt hoodwinked and that I haven't signed anything telling me I have to have one .
The woman told me that she was only reading from a script ,and that my calls are recorded. I told her she needs better training .
So, I am not having one installed .

I have been with edf for many years . Not sure how much longer .

Just thought I'd rant .

Thanks :)

The bad things you have heard are just paranoia.
They didn't phone you out of the blue, they are trying to meet govt targets for everyone to have smart meters by 2020...which isn't going to happen.

Switching from Edf won't make any differnce - all the suppliers are installing smart meters. (Apart from the very small ones)

At the end of the day a Smart meter is just another meter - its purpose is to record the energy you use.

You say you have been with Edf for years - are you still paying the Standard Tariff ?

  • Thanks for your input so far . I do understand what you are both saying . I have heard too much negativity about them , and as I haven!!!8217;t signed anything then I don!!!8217;t think I should be forced into the switch just yet . I!!!8217;ve just looked at another topic on this forum regarding someone who is having problems with them and wants them removed .
I also realise that all the energy provides are the same , and I!!!8217;ll probabky stay with them . I won!!!8217;t go to British Gas , but that!!!8217;s another story . I!!!8217;m on a fixed tariff with Edf for another 2 years or so and i have no complaints .

Just tell them you have a 3 phase supply - they haven't come out with a smart meter for that yet! None of the SMETS1's can handle it, and the BG guy who turned up here to install a smart meter - then found he could not - reckoned even when SMETS2 meters became available it would be a while later for 3 phase!

Well I've got two 3 phase supplies both with Smart meters on commercial tariffs. Installed nearly 4 years ago and they remained Smart when I changed suppliers.

Other suppliers are a lot worse about harassing you to have one.

Do not commit to having one before November 2018 at the very earliest.

And even then its better to wait a few months

I don't see why people suggest telling lies to avoid getting these things.
Just simply say you don't want one, if they ask again then tell them your going to leave them.

And as your a current customer then your on a list. People who don't have it will get some type of correspondence. My guess is that the customers that rarely switch is more likely to see suppliers trying to get you to install a smart meter, cause they want smart meters on their systems, not to install one and have you move away - that doesn't help them meet their personal quota down the line.

I think they are so desperate to avoid the fines, that any S/Meter installed will count on the statistics.

But I agree, those who are long standing customers would be most suited to SME1 meters

As mentioned above, you cannot be forced to install a smart meter. Our company wrote a blog post to explain: smarterbusiness.co.uk/is-it-compulsory-to-have-a-smart-meter-installed

Maybe not, but there are ways around it. Such as the time suppliers stop having stock of heritage meters. If a customers meter develops a fault, part of a recall, recert, testing, etc then it will be replaced with a smart meter.
    Honest? Probably......sort of.

If I was a pensioner , I could be vulnerable

    Why do people say this?

Pensioners are not vulnerable, it is the people with tin hats who get their knickers in a twist because they think that their meters can be hacked because they are smart meters.

I wish I could hack my smart meter and display my usage on my computer.
