The best thing you can do is walk away, "upgrades" are a marketing trick, how often have you heard someone say "I'm due an upgrade"?
It's nonsense, separate your phone from the calls/data SIM contract. It's mentioned on Martins programme and on here regularly that in most instances you save money by not taking a phone + SIM deal. In no particular order these are the advantages:
Buying a phone on finance over 2 years as part of the contract isn't "free", no matter what the sales person claims. You are stuck with the package for 2 years, like it or lump it.
SIM only contracts can usually be for 30 days rolling, or 12 months that become 30 day rolling after 12 months. A lot can change in 2 years, both to your own circumstances and to competing network deals. The flexibility of SIM only means you can swap to a better deal in a shorter time, "better" can be cost, data amount, roaming, "free" TV, network coverage, terms and conditions, etc. Some networks appear to not increase prices annually, Three currently do not on their SIM only contracts, although that could change.
If a replacement phone is needed, there is a huge range to suit anyone's budget, no need to buy from a network, there is no advantage doing so, indeed judging by some problems with repairs, it is often more hassle dealing with a networks shop than a straight purchase from an ordinary retailer. This is especially true for iPhones bought from an Apple Store which appear to have a 2 year EU wide warranty (a friend took her UK purchased "dead" iPad to an Apple Store in Spain and had it swapped with no problem at all, it was 18 months old and no it wasn't covered by Apple Care extended warranty)...0
