07:35 28Apr09 GBP/USD: Weighed Down by WSJ Article on Fed & Citi/BofA
[06:35 GBP/USD: Weighed Down by WSJ Article on Fed & Citi/BofA] London, April 28.
Cable has fallen to an intra-day low of 1.4545 in early European trade, as the continent absorbs the WSJ-reported news that US regulators have told Bank of America and Citigroup that the banks may need to raise more capital based on early results of the US government"s stress tests of lenders, "according to people familiar with the situation". 1.4552 was today"s late Asian session base. 1.4638 was today"s early Asian session top. 1.4695 was yesterday"s high.
The pound is also suffering on the back of increased risk aversion re: the swine flu virus, with the World Health Organization upping its alert level from three to four. The number of probable deaths from the virus in Mexico has officially risen to 152 (BBC website). The Nikkei closed down 2.67% at 8,493 today (at 06:00GMT). This is its lowest closing level since April 1. Dow futures are currently down 102 points. The Dow closed down 0.64% at 8,025 yesterday.
Britain"s "too-big-to-fail" banking groups could be forced to hoard billions of pounds of extra capital as an insurance against future financial crises, according to the FT. This news could negatively impact UK banking stocks from the 07:00GMT London Stock Exchange open.
GBP/USD buy interest is tipped ahead of 1.4515 (yesterday"s early Europe four-day low), with sell stops touted below that level. 1.4443 was last Thursday"s low (plumbed in Asia). 1.4397 was last Wednesday"s post-UK budget three-week low. 1.4774 was Friday"s high.
April"s CBI retail sales balance will be unveiled at 10:00GMT today. An
improvement to minus 40.0, from minus 44.0 in March, is forecast. Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk
