14:21 12Mar09 GBP/USD: Consolidating Losses from pre-SNB MPA Highs
Cable is currently pivoting 1.3725 (today"s European morning low) as it
consolidates losses from 1.3836. The latter level was the traded high following the 12:30GMT disclosure of better-than-expected US retail sales figures.
GBP/USD was trading on a 1.38 handle into the SNB"s 13:00GMT announcement that it will purchase foreign currency on the FX markets (SNB website). The perception is that the SNB will buy less GBP than USD (and EUR). 1.3700 marks the post-SNB MPA intra-day low. 1.3655 was yesterday"s six-week low. 1.3500 was the 24-year low plumbed earlier this quarter (Jan 23).
Today"s Swiss move should enliven the meeting of G20 finance ministers in
West Sussex on Saturday (even though Switzerland is not a member of the G20). The West Sussex meeting is a precursor to the G20 summit in London three weeks today (Apr 2). European Commission and EU finance ministry officials prepared a document ahead of last month"s G7 meeting in Rome expressing concern that the pound"s weakness "is a source of concern for the euro area" (the document was obtained by Bloomberg News). Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk
