Raising money for a funeral

My husband has just died and I'm in bits. Loads of people are talking about the funeral. He had so many friends. The problem is a funeral costs such a lot of money and I'm going to be so hard up without his income. I will have to claim pension credits but is there any help I can get towards paying for a funeral? The costs seem to be massive and then there's the wake afterwards. I shall barely have any income as it is. I don't want to spend all my savings as well. Any help would be most welcome.
Don't mess with pensioners.

I am so sorry for your loss. See if this helps. And also remember that there's no shame in a moneysaving funeral. You don't, for example, have to have multiple cars to take friends and family to the funeral behind the hearse and then to the wake. You don't have to spend a fortune on flowers. And you don't have to offer his friends a lavish spread at the wake.

Do you have friends or family who can help you with all this?

Thank you. That would be a help. My husband didn't have any money in his estate. I transferred all his money to my account before he died as he no longer wanted to manage the money in separate accounts.

  • When you go to register the death, the registrar will talk through what needs to be done and what your options are

    My commiserations to you

I have some savings. I'll apply for the funeral expenses payment as I will have a very tiny income and will need to claim pension credits. The local funeral directors do simple funerals for around £2000. I don't want a chauffeur driven car as there will only be me as a family member but loads of friends.

You are NOT liable to pay! Make the council do so,.

    My condolences to you.

First port of call is the DWP. Also ask the Registrar when you attend your appointment; they will 'signpost' you. Funeral directors can also be very helpful in these situations.

Do what is best for you, not anyone else. Never feel obliged to arrange or pay for anything just because it's the thing to do.

Agree with above and if possible take someone with you when seeing Funeral Director and ask them to make sure not to accept any "extras" - they aren't necessary and the £2K should cover everything that is needed.

Friends may be able to help out with orders of service, lifts for people etc and if you don't feel you want people to your house or don't want to book a place for after the funeral then maybe someone will offer their house
