Unless it is a meter fault then, technically, you haven't overpaid. All gas consumed/lost on the consumer side of a meter is billable. If you are seriously worried that there may be a gas leak, then this needs to be checked with something other than a human nose.

    Pretty much this.

I also hope with your new revelations you have cancelled any meter test you booked, unless you want to pay.

Do you ever have a gas check? I know one is not (legally) requried for a non rented property but even every few years would catch this sort of thing.

If your leak is true cvall the gas leak line and someone will come out and cvonfirm it. And likely cap out your gas supply as it is that dangerous.

here is a video that shows my meter with everything turned off. Boiler is off at switch and hob rings are all off, fire is off.

I have measured the rate after I isolated everything at the appliances. Rate is 0.006m3 per minute. Calculated out that is 35000 kWh a year. Which means if this is constant my usage should be 9000 kWh a year not 44000 kWh a year.

There is no smell of gas no headaches no dead bodies. Where the f is my gas going?!

Meter stops completely when meter isolator is turned off.

If you are absolutely sure that your figures/calculations are correct and that you are leaking the equivalent 35,000kWhr of gas every year then that is a serious issue,.dangerous and potentially life threatening. Domestic gas explosions are generally catastrophic.

You must to report it immediately.

Hopefully just a dodgy meter;or perhaps it's being nicked by "travellers";have you noticed any unfamiliar caravans recently?

We have a leak test check every time the boiler is serviced - all gas appliances turned off - manometer put on downstream side of main shutoff valve, which is then closed. I believe that there is a tolerance on this sort of test -but a leak as bad as yours should show up instantly.
You have to hope that the leak is somewhere easily remedied eg a joint on the pipework -pray it isn't buried under the floor!!

What type of meter is it, Analogue or Digital, and if Digital who's the maker and it's model number ?

Unlike Analogue meters where the display is powered by the gas going through it, Digital meter have battery power and circuit boards which can go rogue and advance the display when no gas is being used

Post No. 6 and 13 show you the OP's meter.

Hi all thanks for replies. It was a gas leak, gas engineer came out and fixed it today, it was leaking outside. The meter has now stopped turning when there is no gas appliances running.

To answer a few questions, it's a rented property so we have a gas check every year. The last check was March this year. He did find a leak and fixed it but must have missed this one.

It is an analogue meter. EDF is calling me back tomorrow to see how the gas engineer got on so will cancel EDFs meter engineer then.

It will be interesting to see how much less I pay now it's fixed.

Thanks for the update. An important part of an Annual Gas Safety Check is a check of the gas pressure entering the property which has to be within prescribed limits. My limited understanding is that the pressure has to be in the range of 21 +/- 2mbar with a drop smaller than 1 mbar across the system. These pressures are needed for stability across the system. It may be that the tested pressures were within limits but it would be interesting to check what is on the Gas Safety Certificate. If GSR engineers across the Country were failing to detect leaks (which I do not think is the case), then we would be getting reports of lots of explosions.

Certificate shows inlet pressure at meter is 21mbar and there is a tick in a box marked gas tightness Satisfactory. However there is a cross in a box marked gas installation pipework visual inspection satisfactory and a note saying Carried out repair to leaking gas pipework above kitchen.

I am not sure what to conclude from that. Clearly, there was a leak that was ‘fixed’ but your gas consumption indicates that there was still a leak. It is always possible that work on one part of a pipe can weaken a pipe/joint up/down stream of the problem area.

And this wasn't exactly a subtle leak either!
