Wasp nest in loft..

  • I heard scratching, scrapping noises in a ceiling and found wasps were coming into my loft from the disused overflow from previous boiler installation. I thought I'll get some wasp killer tomorrow. I could see a very small yellow stain on the ceiling but thought nothing of it. However, tomorrow was too late. Working on my computer a wasp landed on my neck and stung me. A little while later the same happened down my back. I went to investigate and my spare bedroom was full of wasps. A small pea-sized hole had appeared in the ceiling and they were arriving. I tried to open the window and got stung again. I then tried blocking off the hole and it got worse and bigger, and got stung again. It cost me £140 to get someone out, now got a foot square hole in the ceiling to repair, replaster, paper and paint.

My advice, don't leave them, don't leave it to nature, sort it asap. One day has probably cost me £500. On reading, it appears the nest excretes small drops of nector which encourages them to enlarge the nest below. It can lead to the whole nest dropping though.

I found a quite large abondoned nest in my attic a few years ago.  I do not know how long it had been there.  It had done no damage.  However, I would get the nest the sorted out sooner than later as the wasps will be a pest in your garden and your neighbours' gardens.
Last there year I had a nest in the eaves of a flat-roofed out house which I ignored for a while and just tried to kill the wasps using a jam jar filled with water and some jam, but the wasps nuisance did not seem to get less even though I must have killed over a hundred wasps.  I got stung once, but when a neighbour made some comments about their wasp problem, I decided to take more drastic action than a few jam jars.  I squirted some wasp killer podwer into the hole the wasps were using to get into the nest and the problem was solved in a few hours.
