i,ve always eated sprouting and green potatoes cut the bits out of course but that dr mckeith woman said they cause cancer or something is this true if i drop dead i will let you know my ghost will come back and haunt mse.
  If you believed everything we wouldn't eat a thing. As long as the smell and taste good, I can't see the harm in eating sprouting potatoes.:Dbecame debt free December 060 -
The sprouting parts of a potato contain a higher concentration of alkaloids and shouldn't be eaten for the same reason as not eating the green bits (poisonous) although I have done in the past and not noticed any bad effects.
Cooking supposedly reduces the levels by about half. Couldn't find anything about what alkaloids are actually supposed to do to you though.0 -
Phew! Thats a relief - I just cut off the sprouty bits and do whatever I was planning to do with the spuds in the first place. <Checks pulse, just in case ...>The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

Keep an apple, old or new, in with your spuds and they won't sprout or go soft.
Try it..it works! Thanks 'Best Magazine' ....lol0 -

Hi there
I always remove my new potatoes from their bag and put them in a basket, cover them with a black teatowel and store them in a cool(ish) cupboard but last weeks ones have sprouted already.
The potatoes are still firm and look fine, except for the sprouts, so I wondered; is it still ok to use them ?
Are they better stored in the fridge ?
Many thanks - I don't know what I would do without the internet to answer all my queries:rotfl:

They are safe to eat as long as you cut the sprouts off! You could keep them in the fridge if you have enough room in there.0

Hi - My potatoes always sprout as I dont eat them quick enough, never been a problem - just cut the sprouts off and peel as usualWhen you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:0

im with sue on this one, there's only two of us in the house so we'd have to have a potato fest every night to get through the potatoes in time. just cut off the sprouts and away you go....sometimes we notice some are abit funny in the middle so throw them just to be safe0
