Most suppliers charge more for the 1st 125kwh per quarter, as an example BG charge about 24p for the 1st 125 and then about 11p for everything else. If it was a PPM tariff with standing charge it would be about 20p per day then 11p a unit. Sound like you charge is a little high. Remember you are legally entitled to know and have proof of what the landlord is paying. If he refuses to tell you I suspect he is overcharging you.

  • Thanks Spiro, one other thing... I did an experiment last night, turned off everything, fridge, lights, all appliances and sockets and my meter still turned, albeit very slowly. Is this normal?

If the meter is turning, it shows it is recording consumption.

Try turning off all the power at at the main isolation switch (assuming there is one) and check the meter stops.

If it does, check what is going off when you switch off the isolation switch
e.g. exterior/security light, smoke alarm (if mains operated), burgular alarm, etc.
(although a light is probably the cuplrit as an alarm not sounding would use so little power you'd probably not notice the meter moving)

  • Thanks Premier, I have now done this and the meter turns at the same rate as it did last night when I turned everything off. There are no burgular or fire alarms, mains powered or otherwise (I know, I know....) and no security light so its not that. I have checked the lights in the communal areas of the property and they are also all off. Does the meter itself require power to run?
  • can someone help me i've got a private landlord meter a card 1 and got home today and now he's added the last 2 weeks of rent arrears on to my electric meter and set to take £20 a week off me last time he did this i had to put on £10 a day to clear the debt and then £5 for electric his he allowed to do this and it's set at 34p a unit

Why don't you just pay him the rent you owe him?

I suggest tha you pull your over inflated sense of self worth out of your backside then YOU go learn how the internet works.

Rather than start a new thread, I used the search function. Which every forum on earth will advise you to do.

This prevents (depending on archiving times and settings) forums and servers from becoming clogged and slowing down.

It also means that people can find answers to related questions in the same thread.

Now, if you have something constructive to add (which I suspect you don't) then by all mean contribute! Although after being flamed like this I doubt you'd be inclined to do.

Otherwise, please think and / or do some research before you waste your own and other peoples time with pointless posts that come across as both ignorant and offensive.
I very much doubt that modern webserver systems will be adversely affected by a new thread rather than more posts in the old thread.

It is good to look back and see what has been said, and your question is obviously welcome. But personally, I think your question is best started as a new thread with a link back to the old thread - because everyone is starting to think about this question afresh.

Even Suppliers are not allowed to charge non energy debt at more than £1 a week so I think your Landlord is not acting correctly. The non energy debt on meters is for charges for late billing reminders. Check this out to see if it is illegal. Of course if you are 2 months in arrears with your rent you may also lose your house if you don't play ball.
