It might be more constructive to suggest that people take responsibility for what they do. The OP has not been scammed. They bought a load of junk from the other side of the world, without ascertaining what would happen if it turned out not to be what they wanted, and you are now saying their cc provider should be responsible?

It won't cost their credit card company anything. They'll either do the chargeback or they won't. If they do, the cost falls on the Chinese company, who by all accounts are not the most scrupulous. If they don't, the OP is no worse off. As a practical course of action asking for a chargeback makes sense.

I am sure the OP will be most grateful for the various comments suggesting she is more careful in future. Especially as this cannot possibly have occurred to her already.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

It doesn't matter if the seller is outside the UK, you still have rights with the credit card company.

If the Chinese seller is "scamming" buyers, then, by offering their services to the seller, the card company is liable (to the extent of the relevant laws).

these rights don't include change of mind though

I was successful in a UK chargeback on a batch of Chinese items. The problem is, I had to 'prove' that the items were faulty. I did that with photos. After arguing the toss throughout, the seller conceded as soon as the bank got involved.

You've returned the items. How are you going to achieve that? Did you take any photos to show the poor quality? If so, bang in a chargeback, I'd back you to be successful.
  • Hi there,

Thanks very much for all the helpful comments.

Lessons I have learned for next time: to research thoroughly where the website is based and get full contact details and to always pay using a credit card (I know, another fatal error, I didn't pay using a credit card).

I have contacted the shipping company and informed them that it is a return so I will see what they say.

I did take photos of the items before I sent them back but my understanding is that I can't go down the route Stoke has suggested above (chargeback) as I didn't pay using a credit card?

    How did you pay?

The chargeback process can be used for debit cards.
