Installing printer on Vista problem.

I had my old HP 2610 all in one printer running on my old PC with windows XP, and had no problems at all with it.

I have just bought a new PC, and it's got Vista on it.

Is there something with Vista that stops you installing any printer properly?

Installation goes ok, until when I plug in the USB cable, when prompted by the installation process, it won't carry on with the installation.

It seems to 'detect the device', but won't procede any further, with the installation, and keeps saying 'faliure'.

I have tried buying a a new HP all in one printer(Vista approved), and a new Brother printer(Vista approved), and have the same problem with all of them.

The drivers are the latest off the websites too.

I thought it was just my old printer, but its doing it on the new ones too.

I tried using a different USB cable too and it is the same.

Any ideas?

Hav you tried switching it off, connecting the printer and booting up and seeing if it detects it that way?

I had no problem with my old Epson, mind you that's connected via a parallel cabel so slightly different. Vista detected it and had drivers for it, I've not installed anything from Epson to get it working.

I followed the instructions to the letter. It said not to connect the USB cable until instructed by the sofware.

It detects it , but wont install the software either from the disk or internet..?

you can always try unistalling the printer program and just plug the printer in and let vista find it and wait until it installs it it'sself ,has it sometimes work
    or
install the printer program first with out pluging the printer and rebooting and then plug the printter in ,again this somtimes works too with vista
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

I have tried this and it keeps saying vista can't find any, and insert the disk.

Yes, but for the last few days, when I start my email client, it says something like "this client is not default one", then I click yes and tick 'don't ask me again', it says "You have to have admin rights to do this" and when I click Ok the email client starts up.

I don't have any other users in the PC, so I don't know why its askng this.

Do you think this has anything to do with the printer problem?

It's possible. When you put the disc in to load the printer drivers don't let it autorun. Instead explore the disc, right click ont he setup program and click run as administrator, see if that works.

Try enabling UAC (Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control On and Off -> Tick the box then click Ok) then restart your pc, install the printer then disable UAC and restart

It worked for me, for some strange reason =/

It took me well over two hours to set up a printer over my LAN with OH VISTA computer, I never turned off UAC then but I have now as we also had problems trying to open documents by double clicking them.

I am trying to get a downgrade XP disk for the laptop, they said I can have one but untill it turns up I am not holding my breath, you can get a downgrade with the higher VISTA systems but not normally for home basic, but I thought I would try anyway.

This is my notes on what I did:
Had the same issue and found the following solution. First install the driver off Samsung's website with out the printer connected. Once it is installed, go to the printer's properties and take note of the port that it is assigned. Mine was LPT1. Then in a command prompt enter the following:
    net use LPT1: \\host\printer /persistent:yes
It should then reply "The command completed successfully". This command redirects the LPT1 port and directs it to \\host\printer. You should be able to print to network printer now.
If you want more info, google: Capture Printer Port

To print using a shared printer
Follow these steps to connect to a shared printer over the network. You must know the name of the computer that has the printer attached to it. If you don't know this name, ask someone who uses that computer, or go to the other computer yourself and look it up. For information on how to find this name, see Find your computer name.

    1. Click the Start button , and then, in the Search box, type \\ followed by the name of the computer with the shared printer you want to use (for example, \\mylaptop).

    2. Press ENTER.

    3. If Windows can find the computer on the network, a folder will open for the computer. Double-click Printers. If any shared printers are connected to this computer, they will appear here. If you don't see the shared printer you want to use, ask a person who uses that computer if the printer is connected, turned on, and shared with other users on the network.

    4. Double-click the printer. Windows will automatically add the printer to your computer and install the printer driver. When the process is complete, click Next.

    5.
The printer should appear in your Printers folder. You can select this printer when you want to print a document or other type of file.

NoteIf Windows can't automatically find and install the printer driver that allows this shared printer to work with your computer, you need to install the driver before you will be able to print. For more information, see Find and install printer drivers.
