Mobile phones--luxury or necessity?

The poster being talked about has a phone contract of 'less than £18', as does their partner, and they pay £20 per month for broadband. Which I don't think is overly excessive. The mobiles could possibly be a bit cheaper.
The phones are the only means of accessing the internet.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
probably less of a luxury than things like cars tvs etc0

Are you on the right thread?
This thread isn't about internet access, something which most of us would agree is almost an essential these days for many of the reasons you have quoted, but about the necessity of having a mobile phone.
Out of the two, mobile phones with internet access are more important/useful - and cheaper - than paying for installation, a landline and a computer.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
talk about being stalked around a board
have any poster's names been mentioned? NO0 -
as title says
are mobiles a luxury or necessity?
If for example a person says they are struggling with debt, and spends say, £50+ per month on internet access, is that access deemed to be a luxury or necessity?
I say luxury, what say ou?
Maybe it's easier to ask you what do you see as a 'necessity' then?EU expat working in London0 -
some freaking wierdos around
Maybe you enjoy winning an argument slightly too much, but may I suggest a good way to do that is with balanced reasoning, not personal abuse.
I spend less than the people you are slagging off, but the nerdiness of collecting together some examples of free use isn't for everyone, and it can take years.0 -

i am not slagging anyone off, I am on an internet forum asking a relevant question to today's lifestyle choices. What is the problem?
Have I mentioned names anywhere? No, I have not. There is an IGNORE button you can press on me if you are offended by a question0 -
£50 a month is too much for anyone IMHO
Both me and he have iPhones, His costs £9.50 a month and mine is £11.50, gives us all the minutes and texts anyone would ever need and 500mb data, of which is rarely used as we log on wifi foc wherever we go
However we also have internet at home which is £35 a month and nope, Id not be without it
Its our entertainment, our bank access and our shopping plus much more
As for a smartphone need, mine is my everything in one package, thats all I carry with me other then car keys. No way would I want to go back to notepads, purses, wallets, diaries etc
I am on a limited income, I can afford it, I choose to have one
I pay £33 a month. That is for landline mobile and TV package. Including Sky channels that I don't watch. I get unlimited texts with 300 minutes and I really don't know what data usage because I piggyback on Wi-Fi. So what you pay does seem a lot to me
Just to add that includes line rental and all phone calls including calls to mobiles0 -
Everyone has differing definitions of necessity, that is partly the point of me asking the question. Some are getting their knickers in a twist over it.
What's the point of asking the question then? If for you a mobile phone is a luxury then you already have your answer, whether others side with you or not it's irrelevant.EU expat working in London0
