And, may I ask why was it considered a 'write off'?
There's only ever one reason. The insurer decided it was cheaper to pay the value than repair it.

If I am understanding things correctly, in this case the owner would receive a payment (market value of car) from the insurance company, and they could then proceed with a cheap 'self repair' i.e. getting a part from Ebay/Scrap yard.

I've not phoned insurance company yet, will speak to them tomorrow.

Only if the insurance co wrote it off and didn't want to dispose of the car themselves

Some insurers will pay in lieu of writing off, for minor cosmetic damage, and the car will be unrecorded.
Most will allow buy-back, in exchange for 10-20% of the write-off value, with the car recorded.
Some will not. If they decide to write it off, that's it - next stop, salvage auction.

mate recently got T boned in his 07 Focus estate workhorse
Only damage was to the rear door with it still opening/closing.
He got a payout -5% IIRC to keep the car

Our car was written off recently, the buyback was 30% of the payout. I'd googled it, and that was the figure I was expecting. Obviously, insurers will vary.
Check Autotrader valuations, our offer was right in the middle of the valuation range for replacing the car from a trader.

I'll be honest, I am confused by the various 'write off' options that I see in the various posts above. However, thanks for those posts. I will speak to the insurance people tomorrow.

Anyway at this stage, in my humble opinion the car isn't getting 'written off.' It has done only 40,000 miles, and has a cracked plastic bumper.

I will do everything I can to get it fixed, as I reckon that the car which is still in good condition has many years of life left in it.

I would not contact your insurance about this (maybe legally you should). They really are likely to write it off, they only consider using new OEM parts a bumper and rear lights fitted and painted could easily get to writing off value. If the car fixed is worth £3000 and the car in its current state is worth £2000 but the fix costs £1500. Then it will be written off because that will cost the insurance company £1000 (after they pay you £3000 and sell the bashed car for £2000) compared to £1500 to fix.

This is where I am getting very confused.

They can either offer me an acceptable solution, or one that I will reject? If they offer me a solution that I don't agree with, then I will go off and do my own thing - at the end of day it's my car, and I will fix it, either with insurance or without.

Can you please clarify why I shouldn't contact insurance? Is there something I am missing here (I don't know much about insurance.)?

Not really sure what you are struggling with.
Its an 04 Vectra. Low mileage doesnt really come into it. Maybe for a pristine GSI.
Insurance calculate cost/potential cost to fix and cars value. Yours is a sub £1K car
They wont contemplate spending the value of the car on repairs/potential repairs
