The person who should be angry is the plumber. Asking him to send the invoice to someone with whom he has no relationship is amazingly unacceptable.

    Pay your bill!

Just pay the guy, its easier than getting your grandad to do it. Mixing money/a property with family rarely works as they then have a hold over you, make your lives hell.

Agree with everyone else, pay the plumber. You booked him, it's not fair he should not have his money. Sort it out with Grandad later.

Righ, so I've rented from my grandad for six years. About four months ago we fell out (he's mentally and emotionally abusive). - unfortunate, but this is why business & family shouldn't mix.. family issues can make your living situation hell, and rent/property issues can affect your family relationship. In April we had no hot water or heating, so we got the plumber in to do our immersion. - did you report it to the LL IN WRITING and wait a reasonable time for them to fix? Choosing your own plumber is your choice.. but also at your cost. We received the invoice a week or so later, I then gave this to my grandad with a note that it needed paying. - Nothing to do with grandad, its your plumber. Your LL isn't liable for your choice of tradesmen. Ive received a letter today from the plumber to say they haven't been paid  - so pay them. The plumber did their job, so why should they wait for your family troubles to get sorted?
The invoice was in my name with the rental property address on, I've emailed them this evening to ask the to send the invoice directly to my grandad and to get my name taken off of it. - You employed the plumber, so it should have your name. The plumber has NO relationship / contract with the LL, so they CAN'T chase him for payment/put the invoice in his name.
I'm so angry, there aren't words, I know he's done it to spite me
If he continues to be difficult about paying, can the plumber come after me? - Ofcourse, you employed them. The plumber has a contract with you. We're in the process of getting a mortgage etc and I'm freaked I could end up with a blemish against my name - so pay it and there won't be a blemish!:( I know I'm probably over worrying, but any thoughts would be appreciated :o

    There's two contracts here:
    1) Plumber - You to do some work in return for £x. You have to fulfill your part of that.

    2) You - Landlord provide a home in good repair in return for rent. Note
    (a) that relies on you reporting issues in writing and allowing a reasonable time for them to be fixed;
    (b) The LL has to repair it, not pay for your repair. There's a difference there, as the LL has the right to choose their tradesman.

So firstly you have to pay the plumber, the plumber can't and shouldnt have to chase the LL. Then you MAY get reimbursed by the LL - if you had reported the issue as required, the LL would have spent some money but if they could get a cheaper quote, they would only be liable for that not whatever your unilatterally decided to spend.

Update- I've paid the flipping thing and will try and get the money off my grandad when we give notice in a few weeks.

    1. I put it in writing
    2. It was urgent, it was freezing, we have a young child and had no hot water or heating
    3. He gave permission to get the work done
    4. It's the plumbing company he uses

Other points, our living here has been somewhat casual, we did have a contract but that unfortunately has been lost. The house has always been abit of a dump, we've spent thousands of our own money improving it as we had planned to live here forever. Yes for the size of house rent was cheap BUT due to the condition of the house it was also a fair amount and no one would've paid more for the state it's in. We've stayed here despite his abusive nature because I've had a lot of mental health problems and my son has special needs, so being near my parents was worth it up until recently.

After receiving our letter he then called me to discuss it and it was all verbal, we've never had an issue previously, he's always done the right thing and paid for repairs. It just didn't occur to us that he would do this, as family I'd expected him to do the right thing as it's his house (as he loves to tell me) and it was his immersion that was broken :(
Needless to say that once we've moved next month we won't be seeing or speaking to him again
