I didnt say your grandad wasnt ultimately responsible but YOU employed the plumber

You sort your dispute out afterwards after the man has been paid.

Does your grandfather have your deposit in a protected scheme?
    Or was there no deposit?

But I employed him after gaining my grandads permission? Surely who placed the call isn't the decider on who's responsible?
Unfortunately for you, it is a bill for work you ordered,. The verbal contract is between the plumber and you, which is why we are saying pay the guy and sort the money later.

You may either obtain reimbursement from Grandad straight away, or if he's difficult, you might deduct it from rent when you are certain you're leaving the property for good.

Pay the bill, the man needs his money

If you're going to be moving out, deduct the invoice from the plumber from your last rental payment and put it in writing why there's a shortfall....

He doesn't know we're moving yet, only giving notice once we've exchanged as we know our lives will be a living hell once he knows
  • Firstly pay the plumber. While you are squabbling over who pays him, he is missing out and that's not fair.

All sounds completely disorganised - do you even have a contract and are all the legal responsibilities in place as a landlord and a tenant? Can he claim on his landlord insurance? Do you have an inventory?

this is why family and money shouldn't mix, you have been there for 6 years and you didn't once decide to move out? is it because the rent was cheap?? you can't have your cake and eat it.
