  • Hi all, I think a voluntary donation thing is good but I definately don't agree with charging a fee to join, even if its only £1.

I stumbled across this site in august at 3am, crying my eyes out and at my lowest ebb. I had spent hours pouring over the internet, trying to find a way to make some quick cash and coming across nothing except adverts for escort work  . Then I found MSE - if there had been a joining fee I wouldn't have even bothered, but I read a few forum posts and for once I really felt there were people out there who understood what I was going through.

I would certainly make a donation - albeit a small one  - this site means a lot to me.

I don't follow the reasoning of that.

Basically the attack was from an external source, so short of disconnecting that users net connection, whatever defences that are in place will not stop the same person commiting something like this again.

That's why you must complain to their ISP. Their ISP cuts them off, and only lets them on (sometimes not even then) when they've cleaned their machine.

A botnet is worth money. If you shrink it, it costs the "owner" money as it's no longer so attractive. It also costs the "users" money as the less botnets, the more expensive

Most ISPs do listen eventually - they can lose connectivity as people can refuse their traffic. China was (a little while back) the world-leader for spam. Then someone came out with a set of instructions for filtering spam. In the middle of that was something along the lines "China. Who do you know in China? As many as me. Cut them off. You only get spam from China." and then listed the netblocks for China. The Chinese Government was obviously outraged. But 6 months later, the amount of spam from China had dropped significantly - especially from academic institutions. Obviously an edict had been delivered from upon high to "do something".

So donating to a fund will not really prevent this from happening again

It won't prevent it happening again, but if you buy a bigger, faster router/firewall it raises the bar, so instead of a 10,000 host botnet being enough, you need a 20,000 host botnet. The price rises exponentially.

Putting an immobiliser on your car doesn't stop it from being stolen - it just raises the bar.

But no logging of that originating command. So unless they're very careless, it's impossible to trace.

The originating signal/command will have come from somewhere, even if to start the zombie chain
Maybe take a computer forensics team to trace it all the way through, or indeed a squad of hackers who use MSE, now theres incentive

But without logs, what are they going to examine? Move your mouse. It moved - but which pixel to it come from, and which pixel did it go to? Without logs, you're not going to be able to say. Same with a packet.

You can get back to the bots, but that is where the trail will run cold.

As said before someone will have been paid a lot of money to do this.

Depends how many bots were involved. Maybe about 5p-10p per bot.

I did miss the site, I am certainly glad Martin and his team went to such efforts (and expence) to get it back in order, thanks guys.

I did miss my friends on mse and the ins and outs of life outside, I enjoy reading DT that I know I would miss half the events that are pote about and brought to my attention through the threads.

I did miss reading who has and who hasn't clean their bathroom in O/S

I did miss reading lettuce tales from Aus.

I did miss reading my daft thread and my daft pals countdown to our Brum meet.

I only noticed the site was down when I stopped cleaning the loo to check who else had cleaned theirs.:D

Martin. Can I spend my £5 on some more bleach? :D
