Window tinting & the law

I know there's no restrictions on the rear window and rear sides and i know that the front sides have to let at least 70% light through.

Question is are all front sides to a set lighting? If you went to a window tinting place and asked for 70% tint, could it be that depending on your vehicle make/model (& whether the windows are original) that even 70% tint may take you beyond the limit?

Would you expect a window tinting place to have equipment to measure the light that passes through so that they can check you stay on the legal side of things?

If your front windows are already slightly tinted, they will be close to the maximum already. Those gangsta windows you see are definitely illegal.

The Police have measuring equipment, and will not permit you to drive with your vision so obscured. If you are lucky, and pass the Attitude Test*, they may sit and smirk whilst you pull the film off and let you go.

Of course, this would require the astonishing bad luck of actually meeting any of these "Police", which are very, very rare nowadays.

Yes, a kosher tinting place would have measuring equipment, it is cheap enough, but they wouldn't offer to tint the front windows of a road car anyway as it would be illegal to drive it on the road.

The 70% refers to transmission through the glass, plain clear glass is probably only 80-90% transmission by the time the light goes through the various layers, which doesn't leave mush room for a tint.

*I believe this involves loudly demanding to know why they are persecuting motorists, instead of catching murderers :D

They can only prevent you from driving off if they are PG9 trained and the defect poses and immediate danger.

In theory you could open both windows and be legal to drive away.

What, they have more than one officer?

I thought each one had to do the work of the 4 others that they had made redundant, and be grateful that they still even have a job, like the rest of us. ;)

You thought wrong, they can’t be made redundant.

No, he's asking for proof to support your claim

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
