Supplies of festive food staples including pigs in blankets, glazed hams and three-bird roasts could be hit by Brexit-related labour shortages in the meat industry.
Some specialist processing plants that require additional seasonal labour for hand-finished products are already struggling to meet orders, according to the National Pig Association (NPA), which represents processors, abattoirs and farmers.
Most meat processing plants have labour shortages equivalent to up to 15% of their required workforces, as the fall in the value of the pound since the 2016 referendum has combined with uncertainty about residential status, according to the Grocer trade journal. But the labour shortage at seasonal specialists could be as much as 30% because they usually increase their workforce by up to 15% at this time of year, says the British Meat Processors Association.
The British Poultry Council said its members were about 20% short of regular staff and that seasonal specialists, such as turkey and goose producers, were now under pressure because of difficulties in hiring up to 2,000 extra workers usually required ahead of Christmas.
The concerns about meat production come after it emerged that thousands of tonnes of fruit and vegetables are being left to rot in UK fields because of a shortage of pickers and packers in the face of continuing Brexit uncertainty. Last month some fruit farmers said they had 30% fewer workers than required.

Back to an old fashioned capon for christmas and all the better for it. Home made mince pies, far nicer. How the heck did we survive!!0

I must warn my mother. A cousin traditionally gives her a goose for Christmas & I think she usually plans a party around it. Seasonal shepherds pie might come as something of a shock.
Not that there will be any issue with pigs in blankets - mum is Big on child labour.... (oh sis, heads up!)0 -
Wait until they tell us there will be a sprout shortage too.....Merry Christmas everyone!0

Whatever the shortages, even if there are temporary ones, I,m sure the majority of people in this country will still have enough food on the table to enjoy a tasty meal of some kind at Christmas, even if it's a savoury shepherds pie.
We need a reality check here. Perhaps we should remind ourselves that even if there are some food shortages here for a while the UK still a country offering such a "good life" that 30 people entered a trailer in Bulgaria, aspiring to experience it, with such tragic consequences.
Hardships, wherever they are suffered, are all relative.0 -

I have got & loaded a chest freezer, husband is going over every tin in the kitchen and planning a dry goods cupboard - the politicians have still not decided what they are doing.
Bring on GE says I, bring in new blood, meanwhile Do Not Disturb my annual shamble up to Christmas. Which despite being saved for & clearly marked in the calendar still manages to take me by surprise. Although I may source a goose in case lady mother is left without. I think various Scouts have geese for the season, so shall celebrate Halloween plotting goose-ly grisly doings.
Colleague opines that he would happily vote for a Gruffalo party. Cosy to campaign in/as this December, might be a bit much for summer wear though.0
