Future historians will look back and shake their heads in amazement.

I just re-read this and pictured a long lost 2000AD cover...

(... and imagining another remake of Judge Dredd but with Maggie Smith as Lady Hale)

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?
  • Oh now you've gone & done it.

<excavates AD2000 stash & starts mentally "dubbing in" Lady Hale>

(who has a charming resemblance to godfather's mum, so there is jam, home made cakes & how to correctly set in a zip stirred into my overactive imagination!)

The offspring who will be explaining this to the future grandchildren are going to sound worryingly uncertain as to Quite What Happened.
  • Am staggered at the words of a politician on Radio 5 live this morning who said that the people of the land had 'LET DOWN' the politicians when they voted in the 2016 referendum because 'THEY DIDN'T GIVE THEM THE ANSWER THAT THEY WANTED!'

All becomes clear in an instant!

Well, I'm happy to report that as I'm back on the paracetamol, Mrs Un bought a sneaky extra pack yesterday from the supermarket. They were fully stocked in terms of brands & formats (chalky frisbee, caplet, etc) unlike the previous couple of months

I heard something comforting on Monday evening at a social event.

A Doctor who works for a large International pharmaceutical distribution company in Luxembourg said
    “we talk about Brexit everyday”
“we normally have three months stock in the UK we now keep 18 months stock”
“Due to shelf life we rotate the stock in and out to ensure always a minimum two year shelf life”

The Doctor also said this was now the industry standard but the costs are huge and in the end the consumer will pay.

We did not have the opportunity to discuss any particular pharmaceutical product or drug but as with all things keeping an extra 15 months of stock could mean abundant supply but does not mean the occasional shortage or scarcity in something.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

I think when we watch the news we forget there are private entities quietly working away to protect their sector. Two little nuggets on C4 News yesterday, 'the flu jab is in' (I assume referring to the under 65 version), and that because of the faffing the UK seemed to be increasingly omitted from certain clinical trials

Another thing from yesterday which I found quite interesting, I normally wouldn't give much credence to such claims but Corbyn announced something along the lines of a nationalised supplier/manufacturer of generic drugs which I think is a great idea, but I imagine it won't come cheap

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?
  • Actually, another thought. I think a lot of the industry hullaballoo originates from the widespread adoption of 'Just In Time' logistics (which helps cash flow when profit margins are tight). Of course such strategies are fairly fragile, and companies with no cash flow have been forced to stockpile...

I always wonder about nationalisation. On the face of it nationalising some things sounds a good idea but immediately an industry has sole control you lose the issue of price competitiveness and efficiency and then then
you end up paying over the odds.

To be honest I don't think either nationalisation or capitalism always presents a perfect answer. We live in an imperfect world and unless our major industries are run by individuals who are intellectually bright & efficient, and equally important, of a high moral fibre, capable of eschewing unreasonable naked personal greed, I don,t think we're going to find a perfect solution. .
  • Yup, the fly in the ointment with all these high faluting ideals is always the same thing: human nature

It does prevent too much corporate erm 'greed' but it also can over a long period cause a lot of what I'd call 'internal complacency' as in 'we will do what we want'

Although I am a bit too young to remember it, what was 'British Leyland' and the results with that. I did quite a bit of personal curiosity research into it all, my conclusion was they were all to partly blame (government/senior management/workers etc) for it for doing things beyond reason. :) Most of the % of that did fall onto the former two of the above though. Happy to post a 'small conclusion' paragraph if warranted.

I think B.R was going to head in the same direction too, not that what they did do to it actually was a brilliant idea! :)
