A bit strong to describe it as madness. It's no different to the millenium bug - supermarkets were told to stockpile basics. Not that they expected meltdown but to smooth over short term disruption
What are you fighting for? Major unrest if the result of the referendum is overturned? I'd be careful what you wish forIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
We're all aware that this world has changed since the 1930's we've lived through most of it and coped with all the major changes that have been imposed on us without the courtesy of a referendum asking us if we'd like them or not. Were you alive when we changed to decimal currency? if you weren't then know that the disruption and the price hikes that went on then were an absolute nightmare but we all learned to cope with decimalisation and our wage packets were stretched to what we could afford and immense ingenuity was used to make ends meet. None of us starved but we all had to make choices and be sensible. We weren't asked if we wanted decimalisation we HAD to cope with it. We're on a private pension and old age pension too and if things go awry we will find ways to stay alive, we're still capable of working at something and we're more than willing to work at anything that will keep body and soul together and if there is no work we'll use our time growing produce to feed us, keep the fabric of our possessions and dwelling in good repair and help our neighbours to do the same with theirs and still make as good a life as it's possible to make for ourselves whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. It's not a generational amnesia for reality it's just us, the people we are!
We've only had the NHS and welfare state since the year I was born, people lived life before it and people will live life after it if it ends, there might not be as long a life as these 70 years has given us oldies and we may not have the comfortable hospice ending that people have come to accept as the norm but the world won't end with the welfare state, life WILL still go on!
It's really no use trying to pick an argument with us oldies , I hate that you're so very out of countenance over all this and just wish with all my heart that you find the right resolution of the situation for you and yours and peace of mind again. We're old but not in our dotage and far from naïve!0 -
Older people aren't being naive. They just have life experience and feel they are able to cope with very little and dare I say it, k ow how to do things like make bramble tea.
The world has changed from the 1930's that is the whole point. There are citizens in this country that see the changes as being not acceptable to them. The changes for them have already happened and having a negative impact on their lives.
What you're describing, and the panic set about in your writing MrsStepford, to me anyway, is a reliance on outside sources for our own wellbeing. We, as a country, find ourselves deep in an economy that is heavily based on consumerism, debt and borrowing. 'We need, we must have, we deserve choice and whatever we desire we really should have' That is now an expectation amongst younger people, and don't forget I am in my 30's, so much so that anything that threatens such prosperity must be avoided. It's not prosperity in my eyes. It's a situation that has seen independence lost in favour of money. We, in this country, are dictated to by Brussels. How we conduct our business is dictated to by Brussels. Austerity may be under a Tory leadership but austerity is a symptom of a much bigger issue. It is all interconnected in my eyes.
If there is a problem with our economy after Brexit and it does have a negative effect, that negative effect won't be there as a new way of life. It will be temporary. Those of us who can cope will be making bramble tea and those who can't will throw their toys out of the pram. It's happening already right down to this thread.0 -
Well said Mrs LW. You are the voice of reason.
I try to live by the idea that it will be OK in the end and if it's not OK, it's not the end.0 -
Of course the world has changed........:rotfl: it there is one thing we can rely on......its that things change.
It is my experience it is the open minded people, who are flexible, adaptable and open to change and who are prepared to learn new skills are the ones who can survive and thrive when the proverbial hits the fan.
It is the dinosaurs who go to the wall.......
And despite what some people might think it's not always older people who are the dinosaurs. There are plenty of younger people who are inflexible, who have closed minds and who cannot or will not accept change.
Like Mrs L I may be of somewhat advancing years but I am far from naive. I have not exactly led a sheltered life and I have had a fair share of hard times and adversity. An easier life than some, a harder time than others, but overall a good and productive life where I have continued to Adapt, learn and grow as a person.
There was life before the EU and without donning rose tinted spectacles I seem to recall it was pretty good. The 70s were problematic as we've already mentioned. That was when we became full members of the EU so that might have had some bearing but, like now, I think the problems encountered then were part of a wider global problem.
And I think the same now.....yes there could well be difficulties during the transition period but that won't be just down to leaving the EU, part of it will be down to global forces at work.0 -

Absolutely.......politicians are all as bad as each other. There's nothing to chose between any of them.0 -

My sentiments exactly.
Remainers will never accept the result of an advisory referendum secured by cheating as being legitimate. ...
I and DH both voted remain but accept that the majority voted to leave. We don't see that the result was obtained by cheating, and we as a couple and as a country have to abide by the outcome of that referendum.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

My OH and I both voted to remain but we both believe in democracy so if there was another referendum we would back the majority albeit small and vote to leave. How dare the remainders ignore a democratic vote. And BTW we didn't take too much notice of the Leavers hype, we made up our own minds. All that clutter used to be money0
