I did the government's preparation checker to see what it suggests I do to prepare. It helpfully told me that baed on my circumstances I need not do a thing. Helpful.
I can't see any immediate danger of shortages, the only chance of this is people being sheep (unfortunately) and panic buying endlessly and needlessly a bit like some do at Christmas, the latter well its not like it used to be where everywhere almost was closed for a week :)

^ That is the biggest danger by far. I don't mean people thinking:

"I'll get 3 or 4 of these instead of 1 or 2 'just in case' " its more a "omg! omg! *buys 12 to 20 tins *" mindset that is going to cause it.

I could see some shortages of certain brands of things but on the whole no, if you wanted a tin of xyz you'd be able to get it but it might not be your regular brand you may have to get one of the alternatives perhaps.

Perhaps rare fruit/veg aka expensive stuff might be a problem for a few weeks.

Ultimately they (other countries anyway) want to sell things here so they are not going to stop. :)

YesAndy, the little one hob camping hubs use cylinders which simply clip in and you're ready go. A godsend for all-electric homes if the power fails and we occasionally use them in the garden with a griddle pan on top as it's quick and easy to have a griddled chop or something without the hassle and mess of firing up a charcoal barbecue.

Other countries are not going to send perishables in lorries to sit in queues for 2 days though. So don't expect fresh fruit or salad veg. They will cancel all deliveries until we get our act together, they aren't going to waste their time and money.

:) I'd highly recommend getting one of those little stoves if/ when funds permit, Andy. They're simplicity itself to use, you remove the plastic cap from the butane cylinder, slot it into the stove with the notch in the cylinder's rim aligned and push the lever down to engage the nozzle. Then it's turn the dial for the gas and a piezo ignition. All in a handy-dandy plastic carry case - you store with the cylinder out btw.

I use them out of doors when camping and would use one indoors but on my draining board by the open window, if necessary.

:) This time last year, tosspots were offering Spanish celery. I checked this year and it's from Cambridgeshire, if you read the small print. No fuss or promotion or union jacks to advertise it, either. Lots of saladings are available right now as home grown.

Those countries with climates which favour citrus or summrey veg are unlikely to let the produce rot on the trees/ in the fields and will still ship, the holdups will be temporary imo.

I think it will go down something like this; we crash out with no deal. Grand Fromages in the eurozone put in restrictions to export into the UK. Businessfolk in those countries remind their leaders that they are not despotic rulers but elected representatives and tell them to get their fingers out of their proverbials and get business traffic moving again.

The French will strike, of course, but that's as much of a given as the sun coming up........... :)

True. Although we do grow quite a bit here, and we are more than capable of growing more. With modern tech as it is too, its not impossible to grow virtually anything 'here' but the cost of doing so might be prohibitive I can see that. But common fruits+veg I cannot see any problem or there should not be. If there is then the suppliers/growers are likely to be at fault here given they knew there was a risk of a 'no deal' scenario perhaps. They are not completely to blame I know! :)

Yes they are the small single ones.

Yes the little red type single ones. Its a good tip to have it on the draining board actually. That is quite near a window but mind you the back door is next to that anyway so no real danger. I do know they are meant for "outdoor use only" simply for the fumes, as if you used one indoors with windows/doors shut you're likely to get a nasty CarbonMonoxide buildup I suspect.

I'll see next week if I can stretch to one if there are any left. I am slightly fortunate in that there are other bargain type shops around me however it is very hit/miss what they have in generally.
  • I don't think I am going to rely on being able to aquire everything I need as I need it on the off chance that nothing is going to disrupt the supply chain if Brexit happens, I shall as I always have done and not just for Brexit keep in good stocks of things I use to make our meals on an everyday basis. I don't want exotics and can manage perfectly well with seasonal UK grown produce BUT I think that the situation is growing uglier by the day, there is so much anger, resentment and hatred being plied by so many people including the inflammatory rhetoric from MPs both in government and in opposition saying they are going to do all they can to make Brexit not happen that I think I would like to be able to keep out of the world for a few weeks when the end of October arrives and wait to see what happens and let any unrest and consequences of it die down before I need to do more than go to the local shop for a loaf of bread or a pint of milk. If the world wants to play silly beggars they can do it without me!

So I will carry on prepping and won't be lulled into a false sense of 'all will be well and there won't be shortages and there won't be problems' because I suspect strongly that there WILL be problems. Of course the rest of the world is free to do or not do anything it wants to and I hope it's right!

Hey Andy, I'm a prepper. I prepare. It's what I do. Brexit is just another vein. Life has taught me that to prep is to have some leeway when something iffy happens and that could be as little as me needing to take to my bed for a handful of days.

I don't care about the sheep, the shortages, the queues, the panic, the lack of things I use because I'll be out of it... like I said, I'm a prepper. :)

seasonally this is our harvest time for many local crops so whatever happens there are opportunities there.

BUT I think that the situation is growing uglier by the day, there is so much anger, resentment and hatred being plied by so many people including the inflammatory rhetoric from MPs both in government and in opposition saying they are going to do all they can to make Brexit not happen that I think I would like to be able to keep out of the world for a few weeks when the end of October arrives and wait to see what happens and let any unrest and consequences of it die down before I need to do more than go to the local shop for a loaf of bread or a pint of milk. I think it's very fair to say that there has been an astonishing whipping up of anger, stereotyping and hatred by media, politicians and those in the public eye on BOTH sides of this debate, which has leaked into normal people's vocabulary. There's no getting away from the fact it was a very close outcome, the country needed guiding towards a healing compromise rather than the inflammatory scapegoating and rhetoric that has occurred on BOTH sides. People have beliefs over whether we should stay or leave for a range of individual rational reasons, they are all valid. Peaceful civic protest over anything is one of our hard-earned democratic rights, whether we believe in the reason for a specific protest or not, we should be glad people are free to do so and exercising it. Instead however, the media is using it as a mechanism to fuel further division and fear. We're very clearly going to leave the EU. That was always going to be a complex thing that impacted lots of areas, and we really need to stop blaming one side or the other for where we are now if we are to have a hope of moving forward together after 3+ years of conflict whipped up by the media on both sides. When we're being divided (and that division being stoked) I think it's always a good idea to ask what are we being distracted from and stop buying into it.
    :AA/give up smoking (done) :)
  • I believe totally in freedom of speech BUT that includes me too! I have no objection to peaceful demonstrations and people having different even opposite views to mine and being prepared to say so, that's healthy. What I also believe in is looking after me and mine and making provision for an uncertain time with an uncertain outcome as best I can and if that means having in what we need to live for a few weeks without having to leave the house then I WILL DO THAT! I am not in a tizzy, I am not afraid of the prospect of Brexit what I am aware of is a great deal of anger and very bad feeling from the mob towards anyone who doesn't subscribe completely to what the mob believe in. It may be freedom of speech and it may be lawful but it is extremely intimidating and I would give much NOT to be caught up in any mass gatherings that are possibly going to get out of hand.

I don't actually mind which way we go on the 31st October BUT I do want us to be safe, I do want us to be provided for and I do want there to be life after Brexit or life after Non Brexit whichever happens and to actually be able to walk away from the whole sad situation and get on with life as normal, I hope that's not too much to hope for?
