I started growing stuff at my last house and one day went to work and told my colleagues that apart from the cheese my salad lunch was all home-grown. "Oh dear" said one (supposedly intelligent) team-mate. "I don't think I could eat anything that had been grown in dirt". I was too dumb-founded to ask her how or where she thinks things are grown. At least I know what has gone on my vegetables.

Maybe she thinks everything was grown hydroponically!

    Talking of growing things.
    THANET EARTH
I had not heard of this place until the BBC did a radio piece on the Today programme last week.
This is a four minute video which is not only informative but contains some enormous numbers of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers harvested every week. What is remarkable is even these huge numbers represent less than 10% of Britain’s needs. (I am a little unsure of the % as it is a few days ago since the BBC programme.

This is a short video about the workers. Perhaps you can spot what they all have in common?

There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
  • Isle of Thanet is the eastern bottom end of Kent and has always been a very productive food growing area but the greenhouse complex put in a few years ago is cutting edge technology for growing under glass and a fantastic set up.

I was aware of Thanet Earth, and used to buy cucumbers grown there, in Asda I think, nice they were as well, but not seen any for a while

  • It's too hot to cook so I've delved in the understairs cupboard for my Wonderbag and now have some chicken thighs simmered for 15 minutes on the hob and in the wonderbag for 3 hours. No stove going in this heat has to be a bonus.

I have a friend who is permanently moaning about being hard up and her income is more than my oh and mine together. She was off to mr t for potatoes and a lettuce. I offered her potatoes if she gave me a minute to dig them up. They're grown in earth and said they would be germy. She also wouldn't take a lettuce but preferred to buy the bags of lettuce in tesco. She is still moaning about being hard up to anyone who will listen. Some people are justlike that.

Today we ate the first of this year's plums straight off the tree - what heaven! Even the littlies had a couple each, still warm with sunshine! Also picked what brambles were ready (straight into the freezer for now), and sowed the last few seeds from a free growing set from !nnocent (peas, spinach, and cress). They'll just be eaten as extra salad greens over the next few weeks.

Just ordered a few seeds from real seeds, can save seeds from the stuff grown so it will be MSE after the first harvest. I had a rummage through my stash and found some more nearly OOD seeds, that will be sown in a couple of weeks, so that we have a good few weeks of green stuff on hand. I know most of you do this, and more, but I've been very slack recently and trying to get a grip again!

If any of my allotmenteering pals offer me edibles, I can't accept quickly enough - there's nothing better than freshly picked food, especially when it's grown a maximum of a couple of miles away. Got my name down for an allotment, but it will be some considerable time before I have one, so in the meantime I'm going back to growing at home. DH has said he'll sort places to grow up fences etc., and I'll grow in my front garden borders again - not one souls (even local gardeners) noticed last time!!

Got my cash stash to increase again, as we've dipped into it a bit over the school hols, it's comforting to know I can just open a jar and have a few quid to walk up to the local shops in an emergency. Along with this, I need to add a bit more to the tinned stores, TP hill, etc., - WIP for after the bank holiday. :D

    Hi guys
I’m a bit frustrated at the moment because I’ve had to run my stores down because we have to move out for a month for renovations. We should be back in for the beginning of October so then I can start building up again.
On the up side the money I’ve saved not spending on food has gone on the holiday fund.
We’re moving in with one of our sons for the month and I’m itching to get his freezer full of pear related items. He’s just moved to a house with a pear tree absolutely groaning with fruit. Might have a go at making pear cider too.
I’ve been keeping a look out for winter bits and bobs and have picked up a nice snuggly winter best coat and some new slippers. The coat had 20% off and the slippers were on sale. I just need a couple of jumpers and a nice cardigan and I’ll be fully stocked up. I’ve got a nasty feeling prices will be rising after the big B and I’m not a fashion conscious girl so what I’ve
    bought will last for years.
Have a lovely bank hol guys, unfortunately I’m off to work now.

  • I have another casserole in the wonderbag today, yesterdays chicken thighs turned out perfectly cooked, succulent and tender in some lovely gravy. Today I've got a mince and potato casserole in there, 15 minutes simmer on the hob once it's up to heat and then 4 hours in the wonder bag plus a reheat to boiling point and thickening of the gravy will mean less expenditure for fuel in the first place and in this heat a much cooler kitchen. It's a most useful gadget and DD1 and I made it from a you tube video tutorial in a morning. I shall be using it right through the autumn and winter, I'm impressed with the frugality of it.
