Could you bear to buy a little camping stove and some cartridges, or do you already have one? Power cuts happen for lots of reasons, not just Brexit. For the same sort of thing, some 2 litre bottles of water. Water main breaks happen all the time, but also some water purification chemicals used by the water companies come from abroad.
Bit of a first aid kit, as Zentimes says. Tealights and matches, with a few tealight holders from the poundshops for safety's sake.
And toilet rollsalways toilet rolls
Huh. I'm already a bit of a prepper without even trying. We have a gas stove and cannisters as DH is a fisherman. Also have a portable gas heater and cannisters for same reason. Have some bits in stock still from the snow storm last year when we were in a red weather warning area - and it didn't really amount to much for us - so plenty of candles, lighters, water, torches and I always keep a horde of toilet roll. DH and I both a stomach bug at the same time, years ago and we got down to our last roll before one of us had to make a mad dash to the shop and back, praying we could make it without an accident. NEVER want to be in that position again!! lolFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0 -

In all seriousness, "shtf" can happen on a very individual basis, not just in society, or the town, or the street, but house by house (stomach bug at the same time is an excellent example!). Good for you2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Thanks. Spent some time planting some fruit and veg with DD this weekend as well. Would just like to be a bit more self sufficient in general, and I do enjoy growing my own food. It went out the window a bit after she was born as we were just so tired all the time! lol But now we can involve her more easily, so no reason not to start up again.
Started off some cress with her also, as she's 2.5 and I know she will get impatient with all of the other seedlings, waiting for them to grow. Cress is so quick, I knew it would help to see something growing already.
My parents bought us a 'funky veg' seed box giftset some months ago (can't remember why), but have planted them as well. Had some spare seeds, so offered them to a guy at work who I know enjoys growing stuff as well and he suggested a seed exchange! So, he bought some stuff in that I didn't have also. Cool idea!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Talk of torches reminds me to buy a wind up hurricane lantern/torch (Duronic) - that will be very useful if there are any power outages (and we have them occasionally even without Brexit). Much safer than candles!
I did have cause to use some of my first aid stock, as it happens. Managed to give myself a nasty burn and (because it was late in the day and I was alone for the rest of the week) luckily had a good stock of padding, dressing antiseptic wipes and so on so had no need to go further afield. Really helped me a lot. Definitely felt less foolish at that point! I just need to restock what I used now.0 -
We finished prepping yesterday.. I say finished because there is no more room. Took some stuff to DD's house so they've got stocks of toilet roll, tuna etc too. I now have enough tins, dried foods, toiletries, cleaning stuff to last about a year.
Everything is what we use anyway, and I'm just going on the hope that we've beaten price rises if nothing else.Spend less now, work less later.0 -
I probably don't eat mushrooms enough to miss them badly so have a couple of packets of dried from Morrison's. Would be expensive if you a) eat them often b) feed a crowd. Will look out for tinned though.0

I've been doing a little since the year started and the former library training raised it's head quickly as I realised if out and about I wouldn't remember what I'd already got. Visions of twenty cans of beans and no meat/fish/veg nudged me to create a spreadsheet and and accompanying table.
Spreadsheet is for 'use by date' so when I get round to actually eating my way through the cupboard I will not leave something to fester too long. I used a 'checklist' template with date and name of food item columns. Easy to ask the list to 'sort' at the end of adding to it.
The Table divides simply into 'squares' listing types to give a rough idea how balanced my buying has been. Protein. Veg. Fruit/pudding. Staples ( rice, barley, lentils, split peas, cous cous, quinoa et al ) Medicines - over the counter. Personal toiletries ( shampoo etc ) Cleaning stuff. Sorry if it sounds overkill but as I age my memory is dwindling along with the spending power of the pension. Didn't take too much effort and I can see I've reached my sensible limit now so will call it 'done'.0 -
Doesn't sound like overkill, sounds pretty sensible and very useful!0

I’m only stock piling on things I use often. Decaf coffee and instant coffee was on offer recently so have stocked up on 2 of each. Hot chocolate has been bought as on offer too. Stocked up on bottles of water enough to last 3 days. I do need to get a powerful torch in case of power cuts though any suggestions ? I’ve got a battery radio already that can be plugged into mains too.
If there will be power cuts during day I need to get some books from charity shops to read. My electrical company has warned about power cuts in my area already. Luckily My home is very sunny and warm during the day.£2 savers club 2025 #2= £480
