  • You can make fantastic coleslaw with british grown cabbage, carrots and onion, the odd british apple chopped up and thrown in is smashing too and not nearly as big a carbon footprint if you can find locally grown produce.

Not at all - I was responding in light of comments about how great it is to make tasty meals out of spuds, carrots, cabbage and onions. I'm sure its possible to do so (I can think of a couple myself), but in general, the British people don't have the will or the skills to eat these types of meals on a regular basis. In any case, we can't expect 'the people' to adopt these skills overnight, even if they wanted to.

Of course, those at the bottom of the heap are the ones who are going to be hit worst by Brexit. As part of my preparations, each week I'm putting a couple of cans in a box, ready to go to the foodbank at the end of March. A small thing, but I felt as if I want to do Something to help.

  • The skills are easily learned, the will might increase with the skills and those 'at the bottom of the heap' might be able to 'climb up the pecking order' as they are likely the ones with the knowledge of how to survive on spuds, carrots, cabbages and onions!

It's very easy to criticise and put down ideas and suggestions if you have never been in a position of needing the solutions suggested, it must be lovely to not have known real poverty in life and be able to view those who have as a sub species at 'the bottom of the heap'. Some of the bottom of the heap people have done more than climb up into the gutter and are absolutely determined never to be cold, hungry and poor ever again, don't write us off we might be useful in an uncertain future?

Goldiegirl when a person hits rock bottom they learn and they learn fast. I learned and I had to learn fast. It's character building. All these people who are adding to the food waste problem in this country might just learn to appreciate the food they have.

I agree that so many won't like not having lettuce in April because that is the life that they have been accustomed to but imagine that those huge piles of too short, too thin carrots made it into the shops instead piled high under 'useless' for the picky supermarket and apparent picky consumer. I know we don't know who is going to pick and pack the carrots!! and this whole thing is messy and flawed but sometimes in life folk just have to suck it up. For those that struggle and are learning from scratch there's always MSE OS :D that is if there's anyone left here after the jaded swipes of late.

Those at the bottom of the heap??
  • Oh we'll still be here love, and more than willing to share skills and ideas with anyone who needs them, there are a core of preppers on several threads who aren't and never will be affected by the swipes and dissenting scorn poured so liberally by posters who have a different take on things on the mildest and most innocuous of posts made here on MSE OS. We will endure, it's all water off a ducks back and in no way changes our vision of what's needed to be able to not just cope but actually thrive in a pretty uncertain world now and in our futures. Once a prepper always a prepper!
  • We will have to live on bubble and squeak......one of me favourites.

I'm sorry if I've phrased that wrong, no offence meant.

I think we've all been there though, at one time or another, I just thought it was something everybody could relate to. I know I can

  • I don't think I actually said it was 'great' to make meals from spuds, carrots, cabbage and onions? I think I said you COULD make many tasty meals using those as a basis.

Bubble and squeak is food of the Gods, I always cook more veg than I need so we can have it on a regular basis, wonderful stuff!
