Technicalities are important here. If the original flight was cancelled and you did not have a ticket for the flight the next day you were not bumped.

I'm getting the feeling you can keep your E600 "bribe" and claim another for your cancelled flight.
If there were no verbal or written terms and conditions attached at the time stating that the payment was under reg 261/2004, you are free to claim IMHO.
Have you actually received the promised E600?
