EU charges?

I started using a mobile last year, and used a cheap PAYG (ASDA).

I'm now considering a monthly contract, looking at PlusNet.

However, I'm confused by their "Roam like at home", which implies that under some circumstances you would pay extra in the EU.

I thought that about a year ago a directive said that charges for use in the EU would be the same as in the UK.

Can anyone clarify this please?

'Roam like at Home' is as it says - your UK tariff, allowances and out-of-allowance charges apply in any of the European countries as if you were in UK.

So there would only be a charge if I went over my allowed minutes (without Roam like at home)?
For example, with plenty of minutes left, I could phone:

    from UK to Spain
    from Spain to Spain
    from Spain to UK

    without any extra charge?

So does that mean if I went over my limit whilst in Spain (Roam like at home), I would be charged much more than if I went over the limit whilst in the UK?

    No, that's not roaming.

Why do you think you would be charged more for usage over your allowance in Europe?

Because I know so little about mobiles.
More specifically, when I read the PlusNet info about Roaming, it looked like an add-on to the plan (my misconception).

Before posting, I searched backwards through this forum for info, but did not find what I was looking for.
Since my last post I found the "Search this forum" facility, and now I now a little more about roaming.

My thanks to all repliers for their patience whilst I get up to speed.

Ok, I was worried that my English was unclear - enjoy your trip to Spain.

Now that I know a bit more about roaming, it appears to
    me that a call:
    from Spain to Spain
would be an international call, and so would incur extra
    costs.
    Is that right?

Yes, a call from Spain to Spain would incur extra costs (as would UK to Spain)

I'm with Plusnet and used my phone in Spain recently without any problems. Most of the time I was connected via Orange but occasionally switched to other Spanish services.

No, roaming with your UK mobile in Spain and calling a Spanish number (or a number in any other European country) will be treated the same as making a call to a UK number when in the UK, so included your allowance if on contract, or at normal PAYG rates.

A call to a Spanish number while your are in UK will be charged as an international call, as will be a call from a Spanish phone to your number when you are in Spain (or anywhere else).

    .

I hadn't realised that, thank you for clarifying the situation.
