Quality carpet will last more than a few years, think decades.

Is the cold factor of hard flooring greater on a solid floor (concrete, etc.) floor? I'm thinking through a similar question (newly purchased house), but will live with the current carpet for at least 6 months before I decide. I may get another dog, which makes me lean towards hard flooring with rugs (I have three large-sized rugs from when I was in the US 11 years ago, all wood flooring).

Maybe harebrained logic, but I was thinking that the air under floorboards would help to insulate against cold floors, whereas a solid floor would be more conductive/similar to the ground temperature.

I do not understand the appalled attitudes to carpet on these American design programmes.

    Warm, soft and quiet.

We!!!8217;ve just replaced hall carpet after 28 years.

We have no carpets except in one bedroom. We do have a large old rug in the sitting room over the oak floor as a soft underfoot. Having said that we now need to carpet the upstairs to sell the house.

Carpets for me too! The only rooms without it are the hall, kitchen and bathroom.

We changed our lounge and dining room carpet for oak last year (elderly cat - enough said!) and we love it. It's warm, quiet and easy to clean.

It is up to you I guess, do you have any pets?

We have hard floors in the living room, but have no children so not worried about falls etc ... although if I had my way I would have a carpet

I would never have any other flooring in a living room than carpet.
How could you want something slippery or uncomfortable in the living room?

Carpet is the best flooring there is, except in rooms where you need to wash the floor like kitchens and bathrooms.
