Is carpet in lounge a yay or a nay?

How do people feel about carpets in the lounge?
I’m attracted to them because they are cosy, but I also realise that they are a lot of effort to keep well.

We don't have carpets in our house because we have mucky dogs.0

I like them. I'm not keen on the modern trend for hard floors.0

For a few hundred pounds to replace every 5 years (worst case), it's worth it to have some comfy carpet underneath you while walking or sitting on.
We have one room carpeted where we try and keep extra clean and one room with floorboards where we do all the messy stuff like play with the grandchildren. Works well for us.
Also, if used in the right way, they only need vacuuming once a week, even then we don't see much mess.

Carpets for me. What effort? Vacuum them now & again.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

It's subjective. The lounge is the only downstairs room we have carpeted. On the other floors everything is carpeted but the bathroom.0

I live in a terrace where you go straight into the lounge from the street (2up/2down) & wondered whether carpets would survive or to get laminate put in.
I wanted a cosy carpet feel, but knew they'd get ruined by coming in & out everyday. Also, it's above a cold cellar so needed some insulation too.
I opted for a decent quality laminate floor & put a big, thick rug over the main living area & a matching doormat & small runner by the front door. They stop the floor from getting as mucky & all the tiny stones (that seem to breed) are easily swept up & it's somewhere to wipe & remove shoes.
It works out fine for me. The room would be freezing without that rug, for sure.0 -
A definite yes for me.
I wouldn't have anything but good quality fitted carpet with good quality underlay in a living room.
It is comfortable to walk on, absorbs noise and makes the room feel warmer.
Vacuum it regularly and clean with a carpet cleaner if and when it needs it.0 -
I think Im going to go for a carpet in lounge, bedroom and staircase.
Ill use vinyl in kitchen, downstairs loo, downstairs corridor and bathroom.0 -
We have wood flooring in the lounge - I prefer it with having a cat - obviously fur is easier to get up (it's amazing how much I hoover off the floor, goodness knows how much would be trapped in a carpet) and offers less opportunity for beasties to inhabit.
I also find it easier to clean (with the amount of dirt that is on the mop when I steam it, again I wouldn't like that on a carpet). Don't find the wood cold in winter at all.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

I'm definitely in the carpet camp - Covered my suspended timber floor with a layer of woodfibre boards (laminate underlay), then topped it of with a 10mm Cosyfeet underlay. Nice thick pile carpet, and it is sooo nice when walking around barefoot.
A quick hoover round once a week, and a total ban on outside shoes keeps it looking clean. No children or mucky dogs to bring dirt in.Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0
