Virgin flight refund

I booked 2 flights in December, economy going out and premium economy coming back for my friend and myself to fly to America, I do not have insurance as I wouldn't have done that until Aug / Sept. I have been in and out of hospital for Magnesium and Calcium infusions, I am awaiting medical procedures which I am told will be 10 weeks + we were meant to fly on 1st October and fly back on 8th October. I have spoken to Virgin Flights and they say the flights are non refundable, they say I can change the dates for £150 per person. I can't do this as I don't know what will be going on with my health.
I paid for both flights £1235.02 in total, as I paid for the 2 tickets on my card where do I stand with having no insurance, my doctor is behind me 110% if a letter is needed,
Thanks for reading and waiting for replies with everything crossed x

That's why you should take out travel insurance at the same time you buy your flights. Unless Virgin agrees to refund as a goodwill gesture there's nothing you can do so it's entirely in their hands. I guess if you're lucky there will be a schedule change/cancellation that would allow you to cancel for a full refund.

Oh blast, I feared this. Any idea if the flights are valid a year from booking or a year from the day of travel if you want to change dates?

Generally tickets are valid for a year from the date of booking if you have not yet flown the first leg.

If you have flown the first leg then valid for a year from that date.

You will need to change them before the first flight departs otherwise you will no show and the fare rules may say no changes for that.

You could ask VS if you cancel the flights now will you still be able to use the ticket for new dates, some USA carriers allow this most UK airlines dont though.

Ok, will phone again and have another chat about it, can I not ask for the tax back on the flights? :j:j:j:j:j

Yes, you can request a refund of tax (Air Passenger Duty), but there will be an administration charge for giving you that refund. And of course doing this means that you cancel the tickets.

As already mentioned, if there is a schedule change at some point then you have a right to a full refund. So best not to do anything now, since they have to change their timetable later and so cancelling the tickets now could mean missing out if that happens.

Why didn’t you have insurance in place as soon as you booked the tickets it wouldnt have cost anymore and maybe would have covered you for cancelling the tickets.

Hope others may read your post and sort insurance at the right time.

As others have said don’t cancel yet

I have to be honest, I've never booked a flight so early before, I have always done insurance last min. Oh well lesson learnt, you never know what is around the corner. Thanks for all the replys x

Sorry to hijack the thread. We!!!8217;re in a similar situation where my partner is too ill to fly. Virgin have offered a change of date but with four of us travelling £600 is a big hit.
Our outbound flight has had a schedule change and is leaving two hours earlier. Is there any way we can use this to claim a refund? Any help would be much appreciated.

How far in advance have they made you aware of this change?

To be fair to them they gave plenty of notice. Booked in Feb, schedule changed April and flights are booked for August.
