I have saved a lot of money using the site and wouldn't mind putting a little back to help others - I'm sure loads of people feel the same. Just wondering if anything came of it.MSE_Martin wrote: »What a lovely offer, but I must decline!
I'm very moved by the generosity of the offer from some of you. The DDOS attack has been very expensive, yet the solutions we've used are necessary an should help the site going forward.
Thankfully the finances of the site are healthy and its in profit, so whilst this was an unfortunate and expenive problem; it was an affordable one.
Yet I really appreciate the offer. Its very moving and simply by offering, when I know the financial situation of many on this board, you've given me more than money can buy.

Was listening to Martin on Radio2 today, he commented on the attack of the site, I suspect he has a rough idea of the perpetrators. But it literally could be anyone, with or without a grudge against MSE.
Its a scary prospect that so much damage can be created by so few people, I am sure it could keep recurring and it is not just limited to MSE, but to any online business.
I dont know enough about DDOS to comment, but isnt there some kind of insurance policies that sites could sign up to, in case of such attacks?
There certainly should be, Its cost MSE a certain amount of monies as well as inconvenience to resolve the problem, which in turn could just as easily reappear. Yet all it has cost the hacker/s is literally the click of a button.
Im not into scaremongering, but what is to stop them doing it again and again. Costing further monies and inconvenience up until the funds dry up?
How can anyone secure a site (particularly a forum site), from such a nasty virus, let alone be able to constantly afford repairing and re-securing it?:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Basically the answer to your question is that nothing can be done, except secure our (everyone) PCs, I know I keep banging on about it but these criminals can't do very much without the use of our PCs and it is the ONLY way to stop it happening again."She is quite the oddball. The answer is to split Moneysavingexpert.com into several sites, each with its own unique identity under the normal banner. That way the hackers will have to target more than one site. The front page for every site plus the newsletter. Share the forum boards round plus links.0
