We don't live together and eat out quite a bit. Normally we split the bill. My OH says I am the first bloke she has been out with who hasn't paid for the meal! She isn't saying that with any intent btw. More about how things have changed.

If I had something quite a bit more expensive than her - maybe a couple of glasses of wine - I'd lob extra money in.

I find with two of us that waiting staff put the bill right in the middle.
  • Long time married and it really depends on the occasion. Sometime I pay, sometimes him. The rest of the time the bill is split.

We've a credit card for all ad hoc joint spending and my wife and i just split the bill at the end of the month, so that covers groceries, meals out, etc.

If it was a special occasion or a treat then yes one or other of us would pay wholly.

When we were dating many years ago, initially i'd have paid for meals out, then once we were more established we took it turn about to pay usually.

I'm the breadwinner. Even if Himself flashes the cash or card, I've paid.
Splitting the bill would be an act of unkindness to the staff.

We generally take it in turns but in general he pays for more than me because I buy most of the groceries.

i pay the bill (mostly). I have a hatred of splitting restaurant bills, unless in a large group.

    I am a bit confused!

Why is splitting the bill unkind to the staff?

I think dig for victory means asking for 2 separate bills with what each person has ordered - giving the staff more work. Instead of a £50 bill being set on the table and each person throwing in £25 a piece.

In response to the OP - my partner and I don't live together and don't share finances. if we go out we just take it in turns, but no one really keeps count. its usually the person who has picked the restaurant/location that pays.

I do often laugh though when the waiter automatically hands the bill to the man, assuming hes paying.

We either take it in turns, or he will pay and I will transfer him my half of the bill to save the staff having to split it :)
Just trying to make up for past mistakes and work towards the future I want :hello:
