Are they charging the makers of Game of Thrones enough?
According to a tour group I overheard, the businesses that have to close so as not to spoil their camera shots get the equivalent of high season turnover for the week - filming has been in Sept & Oct in the past.Originally Posted by shortcrust

Polly, I was part of the problem.:o0 -
And yet we charge to go into westminster abbey and st pauls.
You can always attend a service, which has no entrance charge. You don't get to wander around looking at things, but you may get some great music.
You can also go in free of charge to pray, although they may be suspicious if you're carrying a camera and guide book.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

Dubrovnik and HBO have a confidentiality agreement to block any disclosure of production costs but when you consider that Croatia and Dubrovnik in particular were in recession, with worrying visitor numbers back in 2010/11 when GOT rolled into town and since then, tourist footfall in Dubrovnik has increased by a shade under 50% - plus the not insubstantial costs of quartering part of one of the largest media production operations in the world today, suggests they might be doing pretty well out of the deal.
IIRC, Dubrovnik's walls are open for free on the city's saint's day - Which is also in low season, so maybe time a holiday for then..?0 -
When I visited Dubrovnik a few years ago there was a small charge to walk around the walls but nothing like £20 a person which is I consider to be excessive. I thought we paid just under £7 a person, which was fair. Has the cost really increased that much over such a short period?0

Really? I'm sure it was free when I last visited.
Edit: Just looked at it on Google maps and there appears to be a fence around it too. What do you actually get for nearly 20 quid?0 -

Not in 2007 when I visited. I was on a yacht moored at Cavtat just to the south and got a local bus in. I gave it a miss but the crew on the boat with decent jobs back home splashed out but can't remember the amount. Croatia was generally expensive for mooring fees and the like but great sailing. Saw a waterspout from the bus which the pilot book said was a a feature on that coast.
Pogofish's post is interesting. It was busy enough in 2007 so I hate to think what it's like now. I've never seen Game of Thrones but now the war damage has been repaired it's an amazing place.0 -
Cavtat is really beautiful. I really liked it there. There is still plenty of war damage around. Kupari is between Dubrovnik and Cavtat, there were only 3 locals on the beach when we explored the empty buildings - it was like something out of a zombie film.

Back to the original question - was it value for money? Compared to London Eye? Compared to a 90 minute football match? Compared to a film at Cineworld? Depends on what interests you. I thought it was a tad expensive but am pleased to have done it, but also for the visit to the fort as the view over the city was even better from there.Originally Posted by shortcrust

We like Cavat, too. However, troops of cruisers led by guides carrying table tennis bats with designations such as Red 17/ Blue 8 we!!!8217;re off-putting.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

We enjoyed doing it. I remember thinking it was a lot before we did it, but the views are gorgeous and its great to experience the walk so glad we did it.0
