I'm fascinated to know what kind of Ph.D. involves studying washing machines.....

Some people find washing machines very interesting.
Busch studied the loading and unloading of a washing machine. ... During her PhD research, Busch also researched how the laundry is done around the world. This was necessary in order to determine in which regions of the world an improved washing machine would be suitable for the laundry-washing process. No global laundry-washing culture exists.

A PhD student at Loughborough University is hoping that his new research project could play a part in the creation of more environmentally friendly washing machines.

According to a report by the Loughborough Echo, Jak Spencer is due to embark on a world tour in an attempt to learn more about how people in different countries wash their clothes.

A comparison of satisfaction outcomes associated with adapted and non!!!8208;adapted products: Domestic versus imported washing machines in Turkey

Nearly half of hospital uniforms are washed in temperatures too cool to kill bacteria, says DMU research

DMU student Kate Riley, who is studying a PhD in “Textiles - Improving sustainability of regularly laundered healthcare clothing”, was able to carry out the research with the help of a Society for Applied Microbiology Hardship Grant.

She said: “The study highlights the importance of research in this area to determine the overall effectiveness of domestic laundering and deciding whether a return to in-house laundering is the most appropriate solution.”

There are even washing machine museums and collections:

It's the easiest decision I can think of.

17 years ago we bought a Miele washing machine. One day, we may have to get a repair done on it. Later, we might even need to buy a newer one.

We've just had our new Miele delivered this week. Replaces our old Miele which was still working but had got a bit noisy and was struggling. This was bought around 30 years ago and just had a break of about 4 years unused. So I wouldn't pay for advice about washing machines, I would choose a make I trust. Failing that, most of us are quite capable of using google for features/price.
