Yeah, have been looking at this lately with the iPhone 8 but the overall cost was so similar I decided not to take the £700 hit up front. However, that’s because I want to stay with Vodafone who appear to be more expensive than some.

Why Vodafone, is that the only network thats available in your area ?

Ive got the One Plus 3T, i have it connected to 4G when at work and I can still walk awy with either 50% or more battery life left, it helps that I recently factory reset my phone.

I’ve been mulling over my upgrade options for a while now and have come to the conclusion that afternoon 9 years of awful battery life in expensive iPhones, I’ve had enough of Apple. I think it came to light recently when considering my options and it came down to ether the 8 or 8 plus. I tried the latter and, whilst it is very good, it is just too large and expensive. The former is simply exactly the same as my iPhone 6 (what a lazy, lazy upgrade from Apple) with a slightly faster processor and camera (which I doubt I’d notice) and a back that is far easier to break.

I’d like something bigger than the 6 in terms of screen but without the excessive bezels as I do like the overall size of the 6. Other than that I’d like a bit higher storage (without being held to ransom by Apple), more ram, better battery and camera. I believe that all of this is possible from apples competitors.

I am not looking forward to using android, but I’ll get used to it.

    Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.

Well actually, you don't get much extra on the iPhone 8 over an iPhone 7 and a good used 7 or 7 Plus is a steal. But be careful to buy an official refurbished one (Amazon) and not one from a private (ebay) seller: Sometimes these are sold (on eBay) while still under contract and then the seller fails to pay and the phone gets disabled.

Otherwise I'm in a similar situation because I'm in love with the modular Moto Z2 Play which my son has. But I'm set up for the Apple multiverse with iPhone 7, MacBook Air and Apple TV so a move is going to be expensive. Have a look at the Moto Z2 Play and see if it ticks your boxes. Looks to me a steal for the price.

Lastly my parrot (this is real folks) was given the choice of Z2 Play, S8, old Nokia 735 windows phone and an Apple 7 and he chose the Apple 7. So there you go, an iPhone 7 gets the parrot seal of approval! His beak actually works on the icons.

It's pretty much well known that most parrots are more intelligent than dogs so a recommendation from a parrot has to be considered lol

Such stereotypes and political correctness (i.e. for or against Apple twisting facts to support an opinion).

I'm an animal lover and prefer animals to people, but there are some parrots who are more intelligent than most dogs - whereas there will be some dogs who are more intelligent than people. I prefer to look at value - and man is the only species that is likely to pay through the nose for a toy which won't last as long as its memory.

Get over to the GSM arena website and compare some of the offerings from Sony and Samsung, you will find one to meet your needs and probably cheaper than the similar spec Iphone.

I also advise buying the phone outright and going sim free.

I had a similar conundrum earlier this year. Needed a new phone and wanted the Google Pixel 2. CPW had a discount on the phone sim-free, but also had a relatively good deal on EE which would have meant moving from a better sim-only deal with three, and locking myself in for two years with EE.

My solution was to get a credit card with 0% for 2 years and buy the handset outright with that. Payback time is the same but I wasn't tied to a network for the whole period and the total cost is less.

Not everyone has the option to 'just get' such a card, but if you can find one with guaranteed acceptance (I found it through the MSE credit club) it's worth considering.

As for the phone itself, I love it. Great camera, smooth performance and more than a day's battery with my usage. A friend who moved to one from the iPhone speaks highly of it, but I've never used an iPhone myself for an adequate comparison.

I too moved from Apple to Android. A year later I'm back with an iPhone- never again. Hated Android, like a needy child.

Sounds like it was too "complicated" for them :)
