Can't upgrade M8 to Android 6.0

Yes, that sounds right. Those version numbers should be OK, but even If there's a version mismatch (like a small patch in-between) it should fail just fail without doing any harm.

I've never done this with a device that could update solely within recovery - Google's devices always require a PC with 'ADB' to send the update over USB - but it sounds like HTC added it as a feature to their own recovery, which should make the whole process more straightforward.

Well I had a go but was hit with the following error after I selected the recovery from internal memory.


"Finding update package
Opening update package
E:failed to map file"
On reading around it seems to be a problem with not having enough internal memory space to be able to open the zip file. Most people are reporting that they can get it to work once they have got about 12Gig of space. My phone apparently only have 10 Gig even if I delete everything so it looks like there is no way for me to update this way.

That's a shame. I wonder if free space has anything to do with it not being offered the normal way? Although it does seem ridiculous to need so much! Short of a full factory reset to free up as much as possible - Which can mean extra work getting things set up the way you like afterwards although honestly it's not a bad idea to do every once in a while, provided you back up things like texts and game saves - your only option might be to try the ADB route i mentioned earlier, this will require a PC with the Android SDK installed.

Never having used an HTC device (Technically they built my Pixel2 but it has Google software) this is getting to the limits of my expertise. You might be better getting more specialised advice from somewhere like https://www.reddit.com/r/HTCOneM8/

I might just leave it. I only wanted to upgrade so that I could install the HQ Trivia app which refuses to do so at the moment(it says my device is not compatible with it). Everything is fine.
