Can't upgrade M8 to Android 6.0
Options
Just wondering if someone can tell me why I am unable to update the software on my HTC M8.
It is currently Lollipop 5.01 but I have seen online that I should be able to upgrade to Marshmellow (6.0). However, when I check for software updates it says that I already have the latest software.
I got the phone from O2 but last year I switched to Three. Could this be the reason why I can't see any updates?

UPdates probably via O2 .
Nothing to do with Three .0 -
If the phone's running branded software, ie, is says O2 when it starts up.Then (as JJ says above), it's down to O2 to issue any new updates. There's no onus on them to do that.
The only other way would be to root the phone and flash a custom rom. XDA have a forum for that (link below). But only start that if you know what you're doing.

The phone is not running any brand type. It just loads up with an HTC screen.
I live chatted with HTC and they just got me to clear the data from both the upload manager and the updater which is probably their standard answer for when they are stumped I guess. After they checked the phone's imei they said there are no issues with it and that because I have an unlocked uk supplied phone running official software, I just need to keep checking and eventually the update will appear. Is this how updates operate? I thought they would be available 24/7. I have tried over the last few hours but there is still no sign of marshmellow for my HTC.
I don't want to go down the custom rom route as I just want to be able to update simply.0 -
When they release an update it tends to be over time, a few hundred or thousand imei's at time (so their servers can cope). But this long after an update I'd have thought it would just connect to the server and download the file?
The only other thing that comes to mind would be to backup the phone, do a factory reset and then try for the update and then restore from the backup. But that's a heck of a faff just to get it down (and may not even work!).
You could try asking on the XDA forum above, they know everything about these things...0 -
When did HTC launch 6.0? If it's within the last few weeks you could still be waiting for it official, for reasons explained above.
You're doing well if you're definitely using an unlocked, 'SIM Free' phone, as if it were from a network, the network would test and possibly alter the software before passing it on - this added months of delays for me on EE.0 -
HTC update site may help.

The way it works is when the phone and server agree you're due an update, an 'Over the Air' (OTA) file is sent to your device, and then automaticity installed. If you can get hold of the OTA file (or ideally a link to the file on the manufacturers own domain), you can install it manually.
The end result is no different to a normal update and doesn't require any rooting.
I used to do the same every update with my Nexus and Pixel devices (I'm impatient) until Google changed their policies and allowed a manual check to skip their staged roll-out and download any new updates immediately.
I've only had a brief search but I've found a guide for manually downloading the M OTA for the M8 Here
It's for the global unlocked model (not carrier locked) I don't know if there is a separate UK unlocked or if that is the one you have. It should just refuse to install if its wrong without affecting the existing software. The direct download url points to HTC.com so should be legit, but as you aren't rooted the phone won't accept an update file that isn't properly signed (ie tampered with) anyway.
There's another guide here that seems a bit more straightforward but the download link appears to point to a mirror rather than HTC.com3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). I have checked both your links and am at this moment downloading the following file "OTA_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_HTC_Europe_6.12.401.4_R-4.16.401.13_release_464427hcbkgvubiqkgdofi.zip"
from the simpler second link. The zip file is 1.16Gig in size and appears to be the same size in the first link which suggests they are the same file. Also in the first link it says that the update 'weighs' in at 80Meg but the file I am getting is over 1gig. Am I getting the wrong file?0 -

Typically, OTA updates are a lot smaller than a 'Full image' (which some manufacturers offer for a complete wipe). For a full OS version update though 1.16Gb sounds about right. The file Google supplies for updating the Pixel from 7.1 to 8.0 is 0.95GB for example.
80Mb is more in the region of a monthly security patch. Probably copy/pasted from a guide for such an update.3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). Octopus Flux0 -
So going by the instructions.
I am running v.4.16.401.13 firmware and have downloaded the 1.16Gig zip file I mentioned above.I'm going to go into recovery mode to select recovery option so that I can update with file zip file. The let nature run it's course.
Does this sound about right?0
