Why does TV only go to standby, not off, from remote?

No, it does not. If it was fully off how would it know that you were using the remote?wallofbeans wrote: »But my blu-ray player turns on and off fully via the remote. Why can't the TV do the same?0 -
I want a remote that turns my TV off completely and then can also turn it back on. Someone invent this and I'll buy it.
I could try using a big stick, but the off buttons are in such awkward places now, that wouldn't work...0 -
I've had a few older flat screen TVs which have used up to 10 watts on standby although a friend has a 15+ year old TV which uses 0.5 watts.
Newer TVs are much more efficient on standby.

Perhaps you were typing this as the post above yours went in but how would your TV know you were using the remote if it was fully off.
Besides which a Smart TV takes much longer to boot up from cold then from standby similar to a Kindle.0 -
Already invented. One of many types. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lime-Energy-Saving-Plug-with-IR-Receiver-13A-240V-White-Wireless-Plug-Socket/253459024376?hash=item3b0355c9f8:g:uMgAAOSwh3JalzXHwallofbeans wrote: »I want a remote that turns my TV off completely and then can also turn it back on. Uses 0.5 watts, turns everything off. Works from any remote. Plug multiple items in. Pointless for a TV using 0.5 watts on standby.0 -
Put a bit of black tape over the light!wallofbeans wrote: »Ok. So can I at least turn the standby light off somehow?0 -

When I decide it's time to retire for the night, I turn off the TV (connected to a Humax STB and a soundbar) using the remote. The TV stays "on" for a few minutes, until it decides there is no more signal coming in. The Humax has an unobtrusive red light, almost concealed under the front edge, when it goes off to standby. The soundbar red light goes completely out. There is a tiny red standby light on the TV. None of these bother me at all and I do not begrudge the small amount of power used, for the ability to turn it all back on again quickly.
However, in the same room is my router, which has a large blue light. The router stands on top of a bookshelf and lights up the whole room to a low degree. As I am about to go to bed, it doesn't bother me, but it does look weird from outside the curtains I guess! The router of course, should never be turned off.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

and also get up and also just turn it off with the button on the side of the TV...
If you turn the TV off with the button on the side of the TV and the remote can still turn it on, the button on the side of the TV is NOT turning the TV off, it is just putting it into Standby mode.
Most TVs have a power button on them, but this only puts the TV into standby mode. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
We turn ours off at the wall. There is one positive. No off button means one less thing that can be faulty.0
