Why does TV only go to standby, not off, from remote?

Hi all,
I've wondered about this for while, googled and found nothing, so thought I'd start my quest for answers here...
Why can't I turn my TV fully off from the remote? It was the same with my last TV too. Both Panasonic, although I'm sure other brands do the same. The confusing thing is, my blu-ray player, which is also Panasonic, seems to turn fully off from the remote. So, if it's possible, why don't they do it?
Do they have a deal with the electricity people? Does it mean our TVs will need replacing more quickly? What are they getting out of encouraging (lazy) people like me to not get up and turn the TV completely via the button hidden round the back, and instead just use the remote and turn it to standby?

It is because most people want to be able to turn it back on again with the remote, and if it is fully off then you cannot.
What they are getting out of it is not losing sales by annoying everyone that expects the remote to turn the television on.0 -

But my blu-ray player turns on and off fully via the remote. Why can't the TV do the same?0 -
Are you basing this on the presence of a red light?
Or have you checked power draw on the devices?0 -

Presence of any kind of light. And the amount of time it takes to come on...
Are you telling me my blu-ray player is just on stand by with no lights on? If that's true, the only way to turn that one off is by unplugging it.0 -
The only way to fully power off anything like televisions or DVD payers is by unplugging or using the switch on the wall socket. If they were fully powered off you would not be able to use the remote to turn them on as there would be no power to the part the senses the remote control signals.wallofbeans wrote: »Presence of any kind of light. They don't use much power in standby mode - you can see for yourself by looking at the power draw figures in the manual - so the electricity cost shouldn't be an issue.
They are designed to work like this. Repeatedly fully powering off an on is more likely to do damage, though this isn't very likely either.0 -

Thats right.
Perhaps you want to look at remote sockets,of course the sockets will then be on standby....0 -
Ok. So can I at least turn the standby light off somehow?0

That will depend on your Tvs options.0 -

This is what I did with my last CRT TV, but since going LED I haven't ever bothered.0
