Dont use your phone on the forecourt of a petrol station.

https://www.verdict.co.uk/retail-banker-international/opinion/using-your-mobile-phones-at-petrol-stations-is-not-allowed-4509913/
The tanoy message then said "stop the person inside your car using the phone". Now as the windows were closed, I had to then leave the nozzel unattended and go to my wife!!!8217;s door and open it to tell her to stop the phone call. Finally BP claims that if you drop a mobile phone, a spark can be produced when the batteries are knocked loose and this could be hazardous because of the flammable vapours produced by petrol products.

Heres an app to use your phone to pay for your fuel

I think this is another example of well-meaning people chasing increasingly small risks on their risk assessments. Its hard to be the voice of reason when the people involved keep diving down the rabbit holes. "If you can't guarantee that it could never happen, I need to include it in the risk assessment".

There seems to be no evidence that a phone has ever caused a fire/explosion, but of course nobody can guarantee that it would never happen. And of course, the fuel vapour around the filling nozzle is especially explosive. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/fuelish-pleasures/

    Mythbusters tried and failed.

Well for kick off, the link you posted is 3 years old.

The practicalcaravan.com chat room thread they quote is 8 years old.

    https://www.practicalcaravan.com/forum/general/38729-mobile-phones-at-petrol-stations

It was a Morrisons fuel station in the article.

The app is a BP app for use at BP stations.

Do we really need to be delving some 8 years in to the past in an attempt to cause outrage and confusion?
  • I have seen signs currently at petrol stations saying not to smoke; not to use phone. Here's an article from 2018:

    Uh huh.

And the app and BP state that you should only use the app inside your car and before / after you've fuelled - not during.

In fact that is explicitly stated in that article you've linked to there from The Sun - A representative from BP said: "It is safe to use a mobile phone from inside your car on a forecourt, but not outside the vehicle. Please follow the instructions both in the app and on the forecourt signage.Mobile phones should not be used anywhere on the forecourt apart from within a customers car."

    This doesnt seem difficult?

Its a load of !!!!!!!! is more my point. We drive in big lumps of metal.
They have electrical systems, hot metal parts, flammable fuel/lubricants and god knows what stuck to the bottom of them.
Yet the mere process of touching your phone outside the car is seen as dangerous.
Dropping your keys could cause a spark.

    Agreed

I dont think there have been any recorded incidents of a fuel station exploding because someone has been using their mobile phones.

I quite like the idea of the app - particularly at busy times.

Although i would have thought that fuel stations only really make money on all the other bits you buy when you're in there, therefore encouraging you not to go in seems self defeating for them.

Wouldn't the tanoy be just as dangerous as a mobile phone?

I can't even get that app to work. It gives me directions to our local station, tells me it's one that is live with BPme then when I pull up it says I'm not near a station.
The bloke inside craic loads of people are asking him about why it won't work.

Strangely, I never have an urge to use a phone whilst I'm refuelling . .

What is the point of this app? You still need to get out of your car if you want to refuel. Once you're outside, what is the problem with going into the store and pay at the till?

I guess hackers / fraudsters will love this app.
Another pointless thing that makes you more vulnerable and more dependent on your smartphone.
