the other credit ref agencies are
experian - I work for them - you can get address info from www.experian.co.uk under the consumer advice section.
callcredit - www.callcredit.co.uk
Are CallCredit on a par with Experian? They sound like YesCarCredit! Ick. Are they Johnny-come-latelys after Experian and Equifax?
I've no idea, but they haven't been around as long - and maybe thousands of consumers sending £3 to check their data isn't rubbish is a good money spinner ....
It won't be long before operations spring up claiming to be "Credit Reference Agencies" but who are nothing but a 'front end interface' to real companies like Experian and Equifax.

Thanks jonnyb and egamar, I do get regular updates from Equifax and will be testing the water in the next few months when we apply for a mortgage. My partner will be selling his house which will give us a good deposit (bless him!) and we both earn the same reasonable wage so, hopefully, those facts will outweigh any negativity that's been caused by mum's credit rating at the same address as me. Talking of joint morgages, and I will go search other threads for the answer if not answered here, does anyone know if lenders are obliged to work their calculation as equal multiples of BOTH wages, if those wages are equal, rather than the unequal calculations of 5 times 'main earner' and less times the lesser earner, or whatever it is now? (blimey, I remember when it was 2.5 times main earner and half of lesser earners wage! No wonder there's so much debt around!) We earn exactly the same as we do the same job and I WON'T be breaking off from work to have children (and if I do the surgeon gets it!!) which is the usual comment against using the woman's wage as a main earner. We think this should mean that they would lend as if we were applying independently. How is it calculated if 2 friends buy together, anyone know?
Thanks again for all your support. It was particularly comforting the night I had that awful phone call too late to phone for advice from any legal body. This was the only place I could think of to seek advice.....and I got it. Thank you all.
Btw, update on my mother's debts: We went to CAB to be told that because they have already helped her (they initiated the £1 per month payment to the credit card companies and got them to freeze the interest) they are not able to help her again as they are bound by the legal aid rules which prevents them for doing so. You can imagine how my heart sank when I heard that but, thankfully, they referred us to Help the Aged who now have financial advisors. We met a lovely Romanian lady, trained in financial law, who said she'll delight in doing battle with them and will try in the first instance to get them to write off the debts. It's still sinking in that I have finished my dealings with them but when it does fully I shall celebrate with a FULL NIGHTS' SLEEP!!!0
