Hi,
We are about to order a sofa, footstool and chair from Furniture village and have been quoted £140+£35+£35 to protect it with guardsman.
Is this worth it and do they actually come out and clean your sofa if it is marked??
Oh and has anyone dealt with furniture village??

Have used furniture village for buying sofa, chair and dining table and chairs... got a good discount on top of sale prices as I purchased it all at the same time... worth asking! Had a problem with one chair (it had a cut in the rear fabric) which got replaced after a few phone calls, did take ages to get it delivered though but carried on using the ripped one whilst I waited; think I may have got delivery charge back and about an extra £120 knocked off for the hassle...
Didn't get sofa/chair protected so can't comment on that... will say all the stuff i've had is of excellent quality and everyone that visits notices and comments on the furniture...
Sorry to ramble but HTH...0 -
Hi,
Thanks for your reply  . That is reassuring - we have looked at loads of other places but didn't like any of their sofas.
I did wonder if it was worth haggling cos they want to charge £39 delivery on top of cost of furniture plus guardsman which adds quite a lot to the price.
They say they can deliver b4 christmas but we will see!:j[0 -
If it is a leather you are buying I would buy the product yourself and do it, it is very easy to do and that way you know it has been done. We have known places to charge for protecting but there is no way of proving that it has been done.
Or buy a leather protection plan (not a warranty) and get a personal visit for guidance on how to look after your leather.
There are better protectors on the market now than Guardsman which will be much more effective at protecting your leather.Lots of knowledge about leather0 -
I bought 2 sofas from furniture village and wasn't going anywhere their ridiculous guardsman prices. I just bought 3 bottles of ScotchGard from ebay for about £18 inc P+P. I haven't spilt anything on my sofas yet, so I couldn't tell you if it's worked. But the toxic smell when you spray the stuff is very reassuring.0

Scotchgard does not work on leather.
It was also a banned product in this country so I would be very wary of what you are buying especially if it smells so toxic.Lots of knowledge about leather0 -
Hi,
Thanks for your replies it is a fabric sofa.
Is guardsman quite toxic then? I did wonder I saw that programme about toxins getting into your bloodstream etc...But I suppose if someone else sprays it on it is not quite so bad!?[0 -
I have a light beige sofa and chair without guard stuff on... dropped quite a lot of stuff on it over the last year or so and everything has come off fine with 1001 carpet cleaner type stuff... not tested it with red wine yet though!0

we bought a new eboli leather suite with guardsman protection from SCS. A few days after delivery one of our dogs peed on the sofa (as they do thats why we paid for the extra protection), we found that its not a physical protection that is treated on the leather, its an insurance policy in case of accident. We bought the sofa just before xmas 2007 and since then we have had numerous visits from their people to try and clean, and numerous replacement cushions that were no where near a colour match, I found out today that they are going to now replace the whole 4-seater sofa. This is still 8-14 week lead time, so it will be getting on close to a year since we made our initial enquiry. I wouldnt bother buying the guardsman 'protection', i would get it done yourself. hope this helps.0

Guardsman is probably the best stain protector on the market although it is difficult to get hold of now.
It is or was also quite expensive to buy, something like £85 for 5L 2 years ago.
I'm a carpet and upholstery cleaner but I moved away from Guardsman as I was finding it difficult to persuade people that the cost was worth it.
I now use Prochem stain protection products at half the price.

I've been looking at leather sofas in furniture village too. The quote they gave me included guardsman at £35 per seat. As far as I could make out, this is an insurance protection product rather than a physical protection (although a protective coat is applied too).
Maybe I'm just cynical, but I figure this guardsman is a commission earning insurance for the sales rep. The rep blathered on about how an upholsterer would come round and fix any tears, scratches etc.
Puts me in mind of when sellers of electrical goods tried to fob people off with extended warranties by 'frightening' them into thinking you cant do without it.
Maybe someone who has had practical knowledge of this can comment and put my cynicism at ease!!0
