Default recorded wrong by EE?

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone can give any insight about an issue my husband is having with a default on his credit rating. It's a debt with EE that has been paid off since 2014. When we spoke to our mortgage advisor, he said he felt it was incorrectly listed which is why it's had such a profound effect on his credit rating. We've spoken to EE, as it was previously listed as unpaid until we called them and disputed that. The mortgage advisor's exact words (in the email) are...

'They are correct in saying it will remain as a ‘default’, however the report shows the default as still outstanding as a monthly payment, which will be the cause of the big dip in his credit score.'

We contacted Experian, who contacted EE, but we've had no joy unfortunately as they maintain it's correctly recorded. I'm trying to attach a picture to show what we're seeing. Is anyone able to shed some light on what it showing as 'outstanding as a monthly payment' means?? How *should* it be listed, and are EE right, or is the advisor right?? I've searched the forum but haven't seen anything that shows what a default that is paid off would look like.

We're trying to get a mortgage but so far, because of this, we haven't had any deals we can afford to go with.

Thanks for reading - any insight greatly appreciated!

Katherine

Will need to see what you are seeing before offering advice.

    Looks right to me.

Also your broker should know that no one sees your credit score or rating so i don't know why they keep saying its that that’s causing the issues.

The late payment markers won’t help - also how do you get £1300 in debt with a phone contract!?

How much was the monthly bill usually?

Has your husband checked what it shows on all 3 files? What does it show the status as on them?

    Experian

    Equifax

    Call Credit

So are you saying that the account defaulted in 2014 and he paid it off? If so, your default should show as settled and 0 balance.

I agree with you that the reporting looks as though the debt is still current/ongoing. If you even look at the date they've got down as it defaulting and look at the history, in months 37-48 it is reported as 0's and 1's.

What date did he clear the balance?

I hope your broker hasn't put in a full mortgage application for you yet?

  • "The late payment markers won!!!8217;t help - also how do you get £1300 in debt with a phone contract!?" - he had two phones on his contract, one for him and one for his now ex wife. Unfortunately it was run up by her out of spite when they separated, and she then left their previous home to become a full time traveller, making it impossible to find her. Ultimately, both phones were in his name so after struggling for a while he paid it off rather than shoulder the legal costs of trying to hold her to account for the debt.

"Has your husband checked what it shows on all 3 files? What does it show the status as on them?" - that's a really good question, I don't know. We've only checked the Experian one so far, but we will take a look tomorrow and I'll post an update.

What date did he clear the balance?" - It defaulted in 2014, and after setting up a payment plan he cleared it in 2016. It is listed as default now but was listed as 'active' until about 2 months ago when we saw the report and disputed that. EE say that they can't list it as settled, only default or active. Apologies for asking a stupid question, but does the months history count up I.e months 61-72 were the most recent months the account were held??

"Also your broker should know that no one sees your credit score or rating so i don't know why they keep saying its that that!!!8217;s causing the issues." - do you mean that potential lenders can see your score but not the details??

No we haven't put in a mortgage application because the lenders who will currently lend to us with the credit rating as it is aren't offering favourable rates. So until the default disappears from the record in 2020, we will either have to wait to buy a house, try to resolve the issue, or build his credit rating in other ways.

Thanks so much for the advice, apologies for being so clueless!
  • It looks like the default balance is zero from what i see.

Check all 3 credit files to confirm.

Lenders do not see scores or ratings since they're made up.

There are lenders who completely disregard mobile phone company defaults so don't give up hope just yet! I get the feeling your current broker is crap, so sounds like you need to find a new one - one who specialises in placing adverse credit applications. In your search, make sure you ask them if they specialise in it as there's nothing worse than a broker who can only deal in vanilla applications and ends up wasting your time and incurring hard searches for no reason because they are rubbish at their job.

Your husband should try using the below link to see if EE would be willing to change their tune. If the default has been paid, then yes it will remain a default, nobody is disputing that, however it should be showing as a default with satisfied balance.
